I have been rather influenced by the huge file size differences I've seen on TV show archiving sites though. The x264 ones are generally nearly 3 times the size.

On site that I go that has directly comparable xvid and h264 tv shows..
Regular: 150MB XVID, 100MB 264
HQ: 300MB XVID, 150MB 264
The quality is basically the same in a comparison.

Hmmm, so far from my testing I can vouch for a result of x264 equaling Xvid at 75% the file size, but I've gotten nowhere near those results yet.

Part of it may be due to my meager single core spec, part no doubt due to not having yet tweaked settings like CRF and bframes, or psy or AQ for that matter.

It would not surprise me that equal quality at half the file size is possible though, because I tried a 50% compression and though it was not as good as the Xvid one, I know the Xvid one would have been way worse at that file size.

There's also the fact that I am perhaps testing in such a way that puts the most demand on x264. I am basically going as low in bitrate as I feel one can with an Xvid compression, and then seeing how much lower x264 can go.

Were I starting from a point of having a bit of overhead in the Xvid clip, the results might be different, even with default x264 settings.
