Does anyone know if changing the executable to read only solves the issue of steam updating to a new version?
I highly doubt it;))

I highly doubt it;)) Read-only is to prevent writing inside the file not changing the file alltogheter (at least on Windows)...

Thanks Helifax. I'm trying to help someone with their computer and they wanted to avoid the update from steam when we bring it back online and I had seen this mentioned before but wasn't sure if it would actually work. I wonder if you ran on an account without administrative privileges to write to a directory if this might work. Wouldn't this keep steam from writing the new exe? I never thought about using an approach like that so I haven't thought it through. Anyway, I will just tell him to keep his machine unplugged from the internet until he's ready to deal with the updates.

When you make changes to source code - no matter how slight and then recompile it, the compiler will make different decisions, do things in different orders, link in slightly different ways depends on any settings that have changed.
A few updates back the entire structure of the EXE changed requiring a fix from the bottom up, the prior patches were all just refinding the injection points which shift when the EXE changed.
is this why Beth is not supporting 3 screens? after each update?

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that Beth would be writing their fix into the source code rather than using a memory hack like we are using so it doesn't seem like this would be an issue for Beth if they really wanted to support multi-monitors.

I'm imagining it's because they are just a bunch of pricks. Really, this game was an xbox port, so it naturally seems little attention is being to anything pc. Profit margins, you know. It's a shame Oblivion worked so well and this one is this way. I guessing it's because it's just a crappy xbox port, but I'm also guessing that it wouldn't have taken much from the dev's to throw a little consideration into the coding for our issues.
Could be wrong, though. Coders: would it have taken much from the dev's and coders to consider this when they wrote it, or is the engine somehow made in such a way that high res options are just a crazy consideration to leave to outside fixers?

Very interesting... cool, thanks! I pretty much understand in a "civilian" sort of way. Interesting to me that none of the other changes or mods suffer from this same condition though, since many change the game in pretty drastic ways. I'm guessing they're not changes to the source code then?

I actually have my TESV.exe set to read only and steam has honored it... same with my skyrim.ini and skyrimprefs.ini.
I made a backup copy anyway just in case but I haven't been forced to use it.
Never mind, it just forced it. Confirming read only does NOT protect you.

Yeah I tried this same thing and didn't save me from a forced update either. Now I have to wait for the Skyrim plugin for WSGF and Script Dragon to be updated. Thanks Steam for yet another miniscule patch that leaves me Skyrim-less. And still no toggle for kill cams?

Any way to post the three files you say you have for others? WSGF; Any way to host those files?

Honestly in prior patches all I needed was to put in the correct TESV.exe to get my old patches to work. Think i've got an old 1.3v sitting around that worked with Hayden's patch just for this reason. Though I wanted 1.5 so I could use mods =/
Forgot to save a backup copy of the 1.5.24 exe.

Yeah, that's what I mean. With all the known complaints and issues, I can't believe there isn't a package available somewhere on the internet with each and every version that's been updated. I'm looking for 1.3 or so. Looks like Hayden is close to release with his next fix, but like I said, so many are left skyrimless until then without those older version files.

My main reason for not is copy right issues.... no matter the purpose, idiot people with lawyers will claim "omg you're pirating! Time to sue!" Only place I find anything close to old packages of the install are from pirate sites.. go figure.
I do think it's time however that we work on a more permanent solution. With the creation kit out, I know we can start modifying certain data files to fix quite a bit of the issues helifax and hayden have to work with. It would be much easier to from a sustainability stand point to create a mod or series of mods that work for us in the multi-monitor community.
The solution would have to be 2 prong.
1. The engine for 3d renderings. This would be a great place to work with the creation kit on. For instance right now i'm testing out modifications to the load screens with scaling and placements so that our multi-monitor load screens will always work.
2. The interface. Mods like Skyui are a great platform and something we should really try to learn a lot from to develop our own adaptation of the mod for multi-mon.

Found a program we should probably all use. Skyrim unplugged.
