Bioshock is a bit disappointing? I was thinking of buying it off Steam, lazy arse that I am.
Hmm...maybe I'll wait.
I had the save game crash problem with Stalker, but the first patch fixed that quickly and I had zero hassles playing the game cranked up at 1680x1050 on Vista 32 bit.
Such a great game - atmosphere, plot, mood, action - all of it. Looking forward to the sequel.

It's disappointing to me. Everyone else (read: Computer Gaming Press and fanbois) seems to think that it's the dogs bollocks.

I was really looking forward to STALKER prior to release as I was pretty desperate to get away from TES4, barring a couple of minor problems with retail I made the mistake of rushing the game then as soon as I had played through it once started tinkering with it.
In one of those mixed blessing (good/bad) kind of ways other things in my life took precedence so I was able to stop myself before I continued getting deeper into moding a new game, it really was a problem with Oblivion I didn’t seem able to stop and I am bloody relieved I was forced to stop when I started on STALKER.
I have been reading really good things about the patches for the game and some of the mods that are kicking around for it now that fix some of the issues/non-issues that bugged me at release so I will be re-installing it at some point and this time I will take it easy and just enjoy the experience without particularly aiming to “finishâ€

meh, the less I say about Bioshock the better, it just shows me to be the bitter consumer I am. :(
Y'know, I'm glad it's not just me that doesn't like Bioshock. :)

The game would kick some ass if they release an Editor, they have some cool stuff to make some levels.

Well it's not the thrill ride I thought it would be. Nothing really compels me to keep playing it... I'm getting sick of killing splicers and I don't even think I'm that far into the game! Oh and I REALLY hate the gun/plasmid switching controls.
And am I the only person who thinks the whole 'moral descision' was really poorly implemented? I mean to flash up a screen saying "YOU MUST NOW MAKE A MORAL DESCISION!" really removes the player from any sense of immersion or connection to the game world, it just reduces the scenario to a simple Y/N button press. I really hate console ports and BioShock stinks of one.
I too got distracted from Stalker, which is a real shame as I was loving it, must go back and rejoin the chernobyl food chain.

Just played some Stalker for the first time today. It runs brilliantly at 1920x1200 on my xp machine thank god, with everything cranked almost all the way up.
The game so far is very interesting but i can see that it will take me many months to finish it...lots of slow bits between action and i'm not much of an rpg fan at all. I did like desuex though which is why i probably like this one. they play quite similar to eachother.

Aye.
If Deus Ex was remade using the UE3 (provided that that engine does actually support Horiz+) it would be awesome. :D

Amazing, 'widescreenies' don't love Bioshock. Having read the previews, reviews et al I was very excited about getting it, then came the whole WS issue and my excitement went 'flop'. Thanks to WSGF and the hack I was once again excited! Now I am playing it and there is more #ahem# floppiness! It is OK, and I like the whole plasmid thing. But talk about linear and REPETITIVE! splicer splicer splicer all moaning away- the levels look the same. The immersion from the moaning (and diaries) has now changed to annoyance! The monotony broken up by Big Daddies who are all (so far) called rosie!
STALKER, however, is great and quirky- gritty and tactical, I liked it so much I wrote the DR! ;) I will always prefer a few bugs and style, to slick and consoley. Down with the PC games increasing 'console'ation! Burn all consoles  .....................(apart from the Wii which is a laugh with a few beers and is unlikely to be replicated or ported to out beloved PCs!)

Can somebody list good mods for me to get for S.T.A.L.K.E.R?
I played it before, probably about 20 hours worth . . . but I lost the save somehow. Plus I haven't played it in a long time.
I played it without mods last time . . . so I have no idea which mods to get.
Oh, anyway, last thing I remember doing in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was going through X18, I think? It was around when you first encounter that monster that makes your vision all messed up and you get a "WTF!" death.
I kind of dread having to go through the beginning though . . . it has such a slow start. =[

I actually jsut finsihed it today. I picked it up again after upgrading, plus teh end level was a bitch for me the first time..
Anywho, the mods have thus far are:
No time limit on Quests.
Extended flashlight range.
Better blood.
Better skies.
MP5 in pistol slot.
Weight capacity increase 50 to 70.
Real-Life map JPEG
Parallax Mapping v2
Improved sky color.
Weather overhaul.
Sharper Textures.
Darker Nights.
High-end preset
The only ones that really have an effect on gameplay is teh weight capacity mod and the darker nights make it a bit harder.
I found them all at Stalker Files, the filefront page.
The Parallax mapping + Sharper textures made quite the differnce in the look. IF you ahve any mods that contain a "system.ltx" fiel, be sure to make it compatible with teh latest 1.005 patch by openign that .ltx file, find "current_server_entity_version = X" and change X to 7.

Mikeh, are those the exact names of the mods for Stalker? I know I'm asking a lot with this, but could you link all of them? :(

Wow, I didn't realize I was bumping such an old thread. Sorry. :P
Anyway, I am having problems with modding S.T.A.L.K.E.R; it usually crashes after a minute of playing. XR_3DA.exe gets a huge memory leak, goes over 1 million!
I am running Vista with all the updates and an running a beta version of nVidia drivers for my 8800GTX.
I am using a no-DVD XR_3DA, might that be it? I tried using the normal one and it is giving a weird error:
"Entry Point Not Found"
The procedure entry point
??0scope@luabind@@QAE@V?$auto_ptr@Uregistration@detail@luabind@@@std@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library
xrLUA.dll.
I forgot to Google it before . . . I'll do that tomorrow after work. I just provided it to let you know the error I get.

Heh sorry no i'm too lazy for that...
But i found them all at "Stalker Files", and most of the names i mentioned are pretty much what the mods are called. I left out modders and/or version nubmers.
The capacity mod i did manually, but used a pre-made mod for reference.
I also used teh high-end preset mod for a starting point for custom graphics options... check out tweakgueidse.com for a slick, detailed guide.
Damn I cun't wait for Clear Sky.

Was supposed to be released at the end of this month but considering they still haven't "Confirmed" that it is 98% likely the date has been pushed back by several months.

Hey as long as it doesn't take another 5 frickin' years I can wait for a bit longer...
PS all thsoe mods are easily found, jsut remember that if any have a "system.ltx" fiel that you'll have to change a line depending on your game version, as i previously posted.
