Displayport-compatible screens needed for Eyefinity?

I really don't want to read through 13 pages of post.

once again: DID ANYONE ACTUALLY TRIED IT WITH A PASSIVE ADAPTER?

YES.

dazboots has. It works via passive adaptor for one screen, but plug in other screens to the DVI ports and it apparently stops working.

the dp adapter doesnt strictly stop working on mine, but you can only choose 2 out of the 3 screens to extend your desktop

same with hdmi + 2 dvi, you can only have 2 out of the 3 extended and you need to have them all extended before you can group them together as one screen

Does one on DVI, one on HDMI and one on DP adaptor work? Or is that a no-go too? (That then gives two possible DVI ports for the DVI cable to go on, so try both...)

this is really big dudu for us..

dazboots

(soon to be me here)

wont have working eyefinitys unless:

a. active DP to DVI adapter (not 100% garaunteed)
b. swap 1 of 3 monitors for a DP monitor.
c. jump off a cliff (in heaven u can have a million displays)

a. and b. will still cost more $$$ ontop of the $400 card,
and c. is too easy.. not quite ready for a million displays.

this is kinda discourging and a sheet load of poop.
:x :x :x :x :x :x :x

ATI should have said something to this extend.

I'll hope for the best.

it seems like only one person tried it dasboot and I can't seem to find anything regarding this matter on the net.

nope fraid not,

also i just put the 4350 back in as a second card and tried every combo of adaptors / dvis / hdmis etc over both cards

i can extended etc over the 4 screens i have available, but you can only eyefinity group on 2 of the screens , if theres only 1 screen attached to the 5870 then the group option disapears

There was a clip posted today on youtube with an Eyefinity setup. The poster there also confirmed it does not work with a simple DP > DVI adapter.

Did ATI really think this through? Or is it a conspiracy with the screen manufacturers to push DP development ahead? ;)

I highly doubt that, considering that DP has been out for a few years now. If there was a concerted effort by screen manufacturers to push DP, every single display out there would have DVI, HDMI AND DP on them. You don't force adoption of a format by excluding others. There is almost nothing that uses it except Apple.

I wonder if this thing works

http://www.hdtvsupply.com/displayport-to-dvi-adapter.html

only $40 compared to other ones.

from the description:

This simple and cost effective adapter will take your displayport signal and allow you view it on a DVI-D display. Because active electronics are involved the conversion is perfect and meets all of DVI's and DisplayPort's standards.

I think they're lieing to us about the active adapter there. One of you guys willing to buy it and test it out anyways? That definitely doesn't look like an active adapter. For one, there is nothing powering a transcoder in that cable. All active transcoder adapters I've seen (the Apple and the Dell) are powered off of a USB port.

resolutions up to 1080p.

Supports HDTV Resolutions up to 1080p and 1920x1200 Computers Resolution

Maximum Resolution 1920x1200 / 1080p

Connector Types 1 - DVI-I Single Link Female

All those things in the quote = passive adapter.

Yup - all of these adaptors are passive unless they have a huge box and some sort of power lead (often USB)...

It is kinda interesting that with 2 x DVI and 1 x Passive DP -> DVI plugged in it uses the DP and 1 DVI while blanking the 3rd screen.

If i unplug the DP adapter it will quite happily switch to the two DVI's

anyone have an extra $100 for that active DP > DVI adapter to try? the one with the usb connection to it, i sure hope it works.. its the last resort.

i can picture all of us using 2 identical monitors + 1 displayport monitor in the middle, there has to be a solution!!

Regarding the 6 HDMI setup, they could have even chosen 6 mini HDMI if they wanted small...

I really hope they at least do something with the 6 output card seeing as it's not released yet.

I want the 6 outputs they've hyped us up over, at least 3 DVI capable...

2 x DVI to DVI-in on 2 monitors
1 x DP {passive DP to HDMI converter} to HDMI-in on Monitor?

my problem is i'm in the UK and nowhere has the Display Port Monitors yet, so thats not an option, all the $100 adapters are US, i'd try Dell but they dont ship to the UK from their US site, so if anyones willing to try one in the US that would be a great help.

On the Iracing forums someone asked if DP to VGA are any different, they are about £30 compared to £6 for a DP to DVI .. would this make any difference to the signal and how the 5870 see's it ?

Geniv have you (by any crazy chance) got access to a DP to HDMI adaptor? then run that into one of the HDMI to DVI adaptors that come free with most GPUs!?!?!

..as I said above...maybe trick it?
