Isn't the 5970 similar to dual 5850s? Not dual 5870s? I wonder if 4 Gb can really make a difference from 2 Gb. It should still be worth it if the price difference isn't much.
Sorta, the 5970 is dual 5870s clocked to a lower speed. They have all the pipes, unlike the 5850s.

It should make about the same difference as going from 1GB to 2GB on a single 5870.
I have put the word in to my fave supplier, as soon as a 5970 4GB is in their channels, I want one. I will be able to sell my current 5970 for almost as much as a got it for and I can finally crank up that AA!
EDIT: just checked my price list, the 5970 has actually gone up by a couple of hundred. WIN!
I am going to try to get one also. I have my 5970 sold for $625. I paid $630. It is mine if it less then $1000. I sold my 6850 c2d, 280gtx, haf 932 setup for $750. I went I7, 6gb ram, asus p6x58d board and my 5970 with a haf932 red amd edition case. After getting rid of the amd proc sticker of course. :D
I want one, going to keep an eye on price. A single 5870 is doing very well for me but can fall a bit sort on some games and im sure it will with other future games.
I am mostly concerned with support. All these great new goodies with the 10.3 drivers or me on a single 5870. I have intermediate eyefinity resolutions, I have working profiles so I can swap between standard landscape and eyefinity in a flash now, I have the bezel compensation.
I think I read the 5970 users are having issues and not getting the drivers to work properly or not getting the card to run full speed in some games like it should.
Not sure how isolated these problems are.
The only two issues I have now are an occasional bug with my cursor getting corrupted and "the line" issue where I have tearing across the bottom portion of 2 of my screens. The line sucks because it gets infinitely worse if I overclock so it pretty much prevents me from overclocking the 5870 for the few extra frames I may need.
That graph doesn't have enough information, what resolution and settings was it at (and yes I went to the wiki url you linked first). It also says it only has a .7 fps benefit.
Anyway I was more thinking of the 5970 4GB that we are talking about in this thread (not a 5870 1GB vs 2GB), I somehow doubt 2GB vs 4GB will be a significant difference.
The 0.7FPS benefit is the average. It is the instantaneous effect those dips represent that might affect your experience. For example a frozen screen for one or two frames, or a perceived discontinuity in the action.
Thats sweet but they cut the 4th output off :( I use 4 monitors on my single 5870. Id hate to have to fit a 2nd gpu to my system just to use the 4th monitor on occasion.

The 5970 only got three, needs all that space for the heat vent!

I'm using the same setup and when I saw that the 5970 only had three outputs I said their goes my dream of a single card solution. I may be in luck though as a friend is getting a 5970 he is willing to let me borrow his 5870 like for ever. :rockout
But this Asus card is a beast if I had the finances I would get one or two. :D
Ugh... I hate to see how much the Asus RoG Ares is going to cost.. the Sapphire 5970 4gig is apparently $700us. Im willing to pay a pretty penny for performance, but sometimes.. you just dont feel like you can justify the cost :( (although I will be trying my hardest too justify it hehe).

I am using a 5970 myself right now. I am using a tritton tri-uv150 usb external vga adapter. Works great for using teamspeak or temp monitoring stuff on fourth monitor while playing in eyefinity. Been using for couple months now. Works great. Does NOT show up in the windows screen properties so it does not mess with the ati stuff at all. Max res is 1680x1050 though. Does not do well with video stuff though. They do make a model that does 1920x1200. Got mine for $35. Sold at bb and I am sure other places.
of course asus makes the beast overclocker model, sapphire and xfx are priced around $1000 which is still not bad considering the geforce 8800 ultra was $899 when it first launched lol
