Looking at the pic of the regular port-out configuration, it looks like 3 DVI would definitely would be able to fit, just put the 3rd DVI where the dp and hdmi port is sitting on the faceplate.
They might do triple HDMI or something... that'd free up the whole exhaust again.
Yeah, I'm leaning toward the 5850 at the minute. It's £200 instead of £300, but only 10-15% slower. Because of the speed drop it's not really an upgrade from the 4870X2, though, so it'd be a 'power rationalisation' exercise if I did. Or I've had to get two, which I don't really want to do right now. I think I'll see what happens to prices after Christmas.
Since I just pulled the trigger on two refurb dell 24" I will definitely need the power of the 5870 to run 3x 1920x1200 panels, infact I wont be surprised if I have to turn down the settings or the resolution in some newer games.
I sort of want to hold out for the 5870X2 for that reason but its ok I'll manage and we have no idea if eyefinity will work with dual card structure or not in the future.
I could crossfire 2 5870 but I think the 8x slot of the Asus P5Q mobo will be too slow for this monster of a card and I also can barely squeeze the two 4850's in there so I look forward to taking them out to put a single card in its place.

Well, TechPowerUp did some tests with different PCI-E lane counts (16x, 8x, 4x, 1x) and going from 16 lanes to 8 made maybe 1-2% difference. In fact, the only thing that had a big impact was going from PCI-I 16x to PCI-E 1x... and the card still had 75% of it's PCI-E 16x performance.
Ill buy the 5870 2 Gb asap, im tired of the 5040x1050 57Hz + DX 9 limit of matrox, even that chinese adapter can run DX 10 at 5040x1050 60 Hz, and eyefinity supports DX 9, DX 10 and DX 11 at any resolution.
5040x1050@57Hz is not a DX9 but a DVI/HDMI one. DX9 is still there, and even with eyefinity you can´t exceed that limit, so yes you can do 3x1680x1050 and 3x1920x1200 but can´t do 5x1680x1050+.

Yep. Think that 285gtx was until now the best choice for 3x1920x1200+, and 5870 is not much powerful than 285gtx.

There will be CF support for eyefinity in the future, so 5870x2 is almost sure included.

More pcie speed is needed for 5870x2 than a 2x5870 would need (you have double bandwidth because two pcie connectors are used with 2x5870 instead one with a 5870x2)

I have seen and done similar tests but with my 4850's not the power of the new 5870, was this new test done with that card?
I think the 4870X2 was ok in a 8x slot so this card should be ok... but it wont fit in my case anyways I do not think.

I am pretty sure your wrong there, the 5040x1050@57hz limit is due the the bandwidth limitations of a single dvi connection. With eyefinity each monitor has its own dedicated connection to the video card so it can suppase these limits easy and it has many videos of it in action, even 3x 2600x1600 30" panels @ full res gaming.

Yes. I didn´t say otherway, but there are still limits (8000x8000 max texture limit).

But dx9 limit is still there. Even with eyefinity, in windows (in linux is feasible with multigpu) are limits. You can´t do 5x1680x1050, for example (even with 5870 Six), altough you could do 3x2x2560x1600 with 5870 Six.
