LOL It works on 1152x864 and VideoSize 100 without crashes

Sucks, but better than nothing.

BTW all these tricks do not work in multiplayer. Should be another check for it.

Does this include in-game menus or just gameplay?

Just gameplay and only in

Just gameplay and only in singleplayer. Why bother about game menus anyway?
I'd be glad if it worked in MP. At least in Nox Quest, it wouldn't be cheating.

Well, I've managed to load one of my saved games on 1920x1080 but it still crashes when interacting with objects.

NOX

Post by Cads-1874 »

Hey was just wondering if there has been any progress with this game. I just bought a macbook retina and ive installed a windows 7 partition on it and installed NOX which is an old fav of mine. Id love to be able to play it on a much higher res, take it there is absolutely no chance of getting it to work on 2880x1800 tho lol.

First, thanks for looking at getting NOX to run at custom resolutions.

The most interesting resolutions to try and getting Nox to run for me isn't 1920x1080 or 1680x1050. The game crashes above 1024x768 I read, and people might think this is a failure. It isn't so, necessarily. I suggest looking at running NOX at either 840x525 (16:10) or 960x540 (16:9). If you don't know then these two resolutions is exactly half of the native resolutions at these aspects, which means non-blurry scaling, which is important for picture quality.

The advantages in short:

+non-blurry scaling + widescreen resolution
+more of a personal view then you'd get at e.g. 1080p (it's a preference in the end, of course)
+these resolutions isn't gameplay breaking. The game wasn't designed to have a viewing field over 1024x768 which might cause game-play related issues (undetermined)

I'm going to test this out myself later and report back, but I also read that it might not even work in multi-player even if under 1024x768?, so that's a real bummer for me, if true.

Edit:

I have successfully tested 960x540 (16:9) to work in single-player and multi-player ! :onethumb: Note: I've only done very initial testing at this point, but I'll report back with more solid evidence for success and any issues that might arise.

1024x576 (This seems to be the maximum stable 16:9 resolution in both single-player and multi-player)

What I did was to only change to the new resolution in both nox.ini and in default.ini. If I only changed to the new res in nox.ini then the game would hang when trying to host a multi-player session. No hex editing is needed for these resolutions to work. The PC gaming wiki should probably be updated to reflex this.

Anyone got any luck running the gog version of the game in widescreen using @Hippox trick? I changed the resolution to 1024 576 16 in both nox.cfg and default.cgf and the game crash when i start a new game or load an existing save file. It crashes using 960 540 16 too. Game is working perfectly using the standard 4:3 resolutions officially supported by the game. I guess i'll have to play the game in 4:3 :(

The trick with this game is that the max width of the resolution is 1024, and you can set the height to the appropriate for your aspect ratio. But the monitor must also support this resolution. so if you want 16:9, max resolution is 1024x576. if you want 21:9, set it to 1024x432. (only edit of nox.cfg is necessary). Use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) or your gpu drivers to add the desired resolution to the supported resolutions, as it is an odd resolution. You can also use dgVoodoo to have more control over settings and also check if the desired resolution is added succesfully. Hope this helps.
