My main problem with all but lian li is that they charge near same price for plastic+steel as almost all aluminum.

The last case I bought is a coolermaster CM690, and at that only because the store I went to wasn't even interested in taking an order for the lian li I wanted (4x the price of the cm690 too). It does the job and all, but it's all plastic and with lots of parts that can be easily broken.

I need a 'design your own custom case' company ;).

My experience with Silverstone has been... variable. I love some parts of my TJ07, but there are a few niggles that spoil the perfection. :(

If silence is important to you, get the P182. Otherwise get whatever's sexy.

Couple it with an Enermax Modu82+ or Pro82+ PSU. I'm not sure about the 425W version, but the 525W and 625W versions should be as quiet as it gets. If you can't get your hands on it, the Corsair 450W is almost as good (or the Zalman 850W if you got cash to burn).

Personally, I use Nexus fans (they're the cheapest of the quality quiet fans around here). I don't know about Xigmatek, but Scythe and Nexus (and undervolted Yate Loons) are traditionally the fans of the silent PC builder. Noctua fans are usually very quiet too, but iirc they don't produce much pressure and aren't ideal for mounting on heatsinks.

i think i'm gonna give the p182 a try then. I was debating in my head alot but it does sound pretty nice. I just hope there's room for future expansion and no temperature issues.

so my wishlist currently looks like this:

Scythe DFS123812-3000 "ULTRA KAZE" 120 x 38 mm Case Fan (there aren't different sizes for mid/full towers are there?)

this list isnt quite as neat as the original one, but im in a bit of a rush this morning (haircut day). thanks for the input my computer has been getting much better and much more affordable. I was really expecting any improvments that you'd recommend to increase the cost, but that's just not the case.

Well, the very point of the P182 is to give the best balance between unrestricted airflow and case dampening/sound absorption.

While the Zalman certainly would work, I wouldn't touch it. For performance, get the Thermalright Ultra Extreme. For silence get the Thermalright HR-01 Plus. For the best value, get the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 regardless. See this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html

As for case fan(s), go with 120x120x25mm fans. Unless you're going for the highest overclock possible on air and don't care about the noise (in that case, get a couple of DELTAs).

When I said I recommended Scythe fans, I meant to say Scythe S-FLEX fans. See this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article63-page2.html

If you do care about noise, I would suggest getting the Arctic-Cooling Accelero S1 cooler (I would put an 800RPM 120mm Scythe Slipstream or equivalent on it as I'm a bit cautious about running high-end cards passive, although reportedly it works for a lot of people).

The P5Q PRO shouldn't have any problems with any quad. I have however heard (I don't know if there's anything to it though) that the P5Q-E is of much better quality. Personally, though, I'm gonna save myself a few bucks and go with the P5QL-E (ASUS P43 board, it doesn't support Cross-Fire though).

I didn't see a Power Supply (PSU) on that list. Again, unless you have one already, I suggest the Enermax Modu82+ (if you like modular PSUs) otherwise the Pro82+ (non-modular). Can't find it? Get a Corsair 450W instead. (This is if you want a quiet computer, if you don't care about noise just get any quality PSU.)

edit: Btw, if you want to go Cross-Fire in the future, I would suggest a 500W+ PSU (especially since you're opting for a 65nm quad).

I suppose i'd prefer my pc to be quiet, but it isn't terribly important to me. once again i'm on the go so i'll look at those fans you suggested later today probably. But from what i make out of what you're telling me, they keep things cool and are quiet?

1. Both. I'm saying it's an overpriced cooler that with worse performance than the competition. You definitely shouldn't get it (unless you think it's pretty or something).

2. Myself, I used to say "who cares about noise? I want performance" and ended up paying the price. My very first self-built system was incredibly loud (it included an 80x80x38mm high-speed DELTA fan!) and I soon developed a severe hypersensitivity to noise. So keep your PC at least moderately quiet (there's absolutely no reason to make your PC any noisier than it has to be) and noise will remain a non-issue, which is the best way.

3. Fans of 25mm thickness are considerably quieter than 38mm thick ones while still providing more than enough cooling performance for essentially any high-end system (as long as they're 120mm).

That fan is 1600 RPM and is going to be louder than necessary. I would've settled for a 1200 RPM fan. You could probably do the 7V mod on it though (or use a fan controller) so that's fine I guess.

Other than that it's looking good.

Please, excuse me while I roll my eyes. I'll believe that when I see it listed here.

If they're still anything like my PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 850 SSI they're louder than any high-end graphics card on the market. My 850 SSI uses an 80x80x38mm tri-blade Delta fan and it's by far the loudest PC component I've ever heard (and I've had high-end cards like X1900XTX, 7800GTX, 8800GTX 768). Actually, at idle it compares quite well to an X1900XTX at full load or one of these.

I would stay miles away from PC Power & Cooling for that reason. The worst spent $800 of my life. Besides, he said in his OP that he's already got a PSU and HDD.

Wow, excuse me while I just assume that you are having a really bad day. I actually owned a PC P&C 850 SSI, it was the quietest component in my PC that had a fan. And my computer didn't do hovercraft impressions either. You must have gotten a bad one, or an early model that had a louder fan. I'm going to guess early model because it set you back $800 :shock: .

Right now I've got a PC P&C Silencer 750 and its also quiet.

Sorry to hear about your lemon though. :D

I vote for PC P&C too, I have built two computers with their silencer series and they are extremely quiet.
