DX10 Support for TH2GO

Post by JKeefe »

Thanks for the data. Based on this information, it appears the restricting factor for ultra-high resolutions is not DirectX or the GPU, but the limitations of the DVI display connection, correct? Is there a different display connector that can supplant DVI and offer greater resolutions?
Display Port is the coming video interconnect technology, but it doesn't appear its bandwidth is any higher than dual-link DVI.

Also, the fact that I ran a game at 4500x1200 kinda proves that DX 9.0c is not limited to 4096 horizontal pixels, which surprises me because that number gets spouted off everywhere as gospel truth.
The real truth is that DX9-compliant GPUs are restricted to 4096 pixels, not DX9 itself. It's an understandable confusion.

One question about your numers. Shouldn't the last entry of 5400x1200 be 6,480,000 pixels?
Yep. Must have punched the wrong buttons on the calculator.

Does anyone know the highest successful resolution output by SoftTH?
I know people are doing 6x00 x 1200 (triple 1920x1200 with extra horizontal pixels for bezel management. Theoretically 7680x1600 (triple 30" widescreens) is possible, but I haven't seen anyone do it...

BTW(!), today's announcement from Matrox about 5040x1050 support obviously changes this discussion a but.

I just noticed that you run TH on 3 21" CRTs. You must have a monster of a desk to hold that weight!
It is quite a desk. I'll post a picture when I get a chance.

OK, I think I've got a better understanding now. One more question:

The real truth is that DX9-compliant GPUs are restricted to 4096 pixels, not DX9 itself. It's an understandable confusion.

So is that fact that my GPU (8800GTS) is DX10-compatible the reason why it can render >4096 pixels, even though I'm only using DX9?

Yeah, saw the Matrox announcement. I'm taking donations.

Not technically. The reason that your 8800GTS can render >4096 pixels is simply that it can. It also happens to be a DX10-compliant GPU. Pretty much a coincidence as far as this situation goes.

That makes sense, and looking back at the data we've discussed it now seems kind of obvious to me.

Thanks for the education! :D
