Well it's an equasion of money versus surface area.
3x 24" (or 3x 22" if you will) will have relatively more surface area per $$.
or vise versa less $$ per square inch :P
Triplehead gaming isn't just about increasing surface area. If you wanted to do that, just buy a Dell 30" widescreen monitor. :) (Yes, I know you've demonstrated that you could achieve the same with a TripleHead2Go and 3 portrait monitors, but as Paddy says, that's not possible.)
The idea is to extend your virtual peripheral vision (the game image) into your real peripheral vision. The image is "so wide" intentionally - this image aspect mimics that of the human eye FOV (much wider than it is tall).
