Lock On: Modern Air Combat (with Flaming Cliffs Addon)

Post by JEFX »

Hi everybody, first post here.
Congrats, very informative forum!

I am in the process of deciding to buy 3 displays and go THtoGO myself for Lockon FLaming cliffs, but reading all this, I am not so sure anymore?? Is it possible to play it well ?

Anyone thinks it would be a better investment to buy a great Samsung 305T 30'' display instead?

Thanks

If you have a TrackIR it's good enough.

Thanks for your answer, but what do you mean by 'good enough'?
(I do have Tir4)
Do you mean good enough for my system specs?

Maybe I can reformulate my question(s) better :

1- Which is the most immersive, beautiful, exciting, flight sim experience?
2- Which is the most hardware demanding (and can my system handle it?)

A set-up with 3 x 19''s LCDs and Triple head2 go ???
or
A set-up with a 30'' Samsung LCD (for example) ???

(Maybe also considering other flight sims or upcoming Black Shark for which I know I will be spending lots of time...)

another question, about my system :

Considering I cannot change the basic system now, it is possible for me to upgrade my vidcard. Would it be better to upgrade? Maybe a 9800GTX or a 8800GTX ??? Would it make a big difference?

thanks a lot!

By the way, I just noticed now in your sig that you are using 3 x 21'' ?
How does that work with triple head to go? I thought that LCDs had a native resolution

Hello JEFX ...
I'm sure he meant 'good enough' as in the TH experience will be good enough if you have a TrackIR and he is the guy to know these things especially when it comes to sims.

My opinion ...
TH far outweighs having a large screen as it is more immersive having the extra peripheral vision.
A large screen is just that ... larger ... and not really any more immersive as there is no more extra peripheral vision.

Having a 9800GTX would make a big difference for newer games.

His monitors are CRT's not TFT's ...
I use 3 x 20" Dell TFT's that have a native res of 1600x1200 but they look fine at 1280x1024 ... you wouldn't know it is not their native res.

Oh ... and welcome to the forum ... :D

JEFX,

"Good enough" means this: LOMAC and Flaming Cliffs allow configuration for cockpit zoom such that the zoom out is not quite far enough to see your HUD and instruments at the same time. With a TrackIR, you can dip your head down to peek at your instruments or do other heads-down cockpit work as necessary.

So, it's not perfect, but with TrackIR it's good enough. Without TrackIR I would think that it would be a frustrating experience.

Thanks

I see what you mean, I have seen the problem on the forums.
I think a couple of fellows have found a not so bad compromise (ggg and Teka-teka), I will be going for their configurations when my TH2Go and my 3 Samsung 943BX arrive in a couple of days.

I think I am going to wait for new vidcards and try and work all this with my 7950GX2 for now (you think it will work with such resolution?). Then I will change my card.

That GPU will be fine. I ran Lock On initially in triplehead with a 6800GT, but I needed to do so at 2400x600 at reduced settings.

But I just ordered 3 nice Saumsung 943BX 19'' LCDs (and a TH2GO digital) that run in native resolution of 1280x1024, therefore I will HAVE to play at 3840X1024, right? Do you think my 7950GX2 will handle this res.?

And will I have to lower all the settings in LOFC? Right now, at 1600X1200, I can play with a comfortable average of 25-30 FPS with everything maxed (including Birdy's high scenery addon and the new Reload terrain textures!!!)

thanks for the help

You won't have to play at 3840x1024, but you need to use that res to avoid interpolation on your monitors.

When I used 2400x600 I was using CRTs, so changing the res didn't matter.

I think you will be fine. Start with reasonable settings, not everything cranked all the way, and see how it does. I'm guessing you will be able to set certain things all the way up and have to back off on a few others.

Thanks for the advice JK.
This is a very interesting and friendly forum (I didnt know it before starting to investigate for TH2Go...) Now I am really glad I found it!

I will start with the monitors and stand and TH2go (on the way).
I will do as you said and if I feel I cannot get a comfortable fluidity, then I will consider upgrading my Vidcard...

thanks
