ATI seems to have fixed in (at least it's been proven to be there) in the Catylyst drivers for the x1000 series. But, if you're having problems, it shows that Nvidia still has the best support for this.

too bad... this doesnt help us notebook people. I have integraded radeon 9000 igp. I can't play newer games because at high res its too weak and at low res its either scaled so everythings fat or not scaled at all. It also can't play old games... cause if it only supports a low res, I have the same problem. Diablo II and starcraft have this problem. So all around. I am pretty much screwed. I can't play any games at all.
cmon....

Have you tried Powerstrip yet. I believe that still is the only option to get black bars on Ati cards.

powerstrip does jack on laptops. At least on mine it does. When I try to shrink the horizontal or vertical it just makes the screen get all wavy and do weird stuff. Ive tried with timings on and off. Most other laptops probably do same thing. I was hopin some smart hackers would read my thread above about EDIDS... I guess its more complicated than it looks

Well Powestrip doesn't work for me. i can't change size and position with it. When I click on the resize button the lcd turns to black and than back to normal.
And there's something strange happening when ps is running. From time to time the display turns black for a sec.
I'm using a Belinea 102035W with a DVI-D cable on a Radeon 9550GT

Hi
I've got a little problem. I was trying some resolutions on my widescreen monitor with native resolution 1440x900 to see how can it output some of them.
For testing I've chosen 1280x720 and checked "Use Centered Output" under DisplayProperties/Settings/Advanced/FlatPanelDisplay (I have GeForce 6600GT video card) and the srceen wasn't output centered. I have to black bars at the bottom and top but image was horizontal stretched :/ What's more with "Use Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling" that resolution fitted whole screen... why's that?
While trying 1024x768 resolution I have black area all around the image, but it still seams to be stretched horizontal.
I'm using ForceWare 84.21 drivers and the monitor is connected to PC via digital output.
Edit: I check something else out. I changed the resolution to 1280x720 once again and took screenshot of the pulpit switched back to 1440x900 and displayed it in fullscreen mode in Irfanview and guess what? The image obtain by "Use Centered Output" in 1280x720 is shorted then that in Irfanview. So it's not only thah image is stretched horizontal but also shrinked vertical :/

Exactly and I don't know what's wrong. Maybe sth wrong with drivers and I'm almost 100% certain here's the cause. In few days I am doing clear installation of OS so if that won't help I will try to find a solution for the problem.
I'm still visiting this post maybe someone has similar problem?

What screen do you have, and what scaling settings do you use on the screen menu (OSD)? :)

I'm using Fujitsu-Siemenst W19-1 and there's no possibility to change scaling in OSD.
Edit: When I leave 1440x900 resolution and check "Use Centered Output" then I can see a bit of my desktop stretched to whole monitor. Right now it's white background. With "Use Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling" there chaos on my monitor, just garbage with black bars at the bottom and top.
You can see the gargabe here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=12c6a1f77aa2f933ca8a7821a28e6c15&t=66608&page=3 . It's not my photo but looks similar.

Weird... :?
Try this:
Enter Nvidia display settings -> screen resolution & refresh rates. Select the resolution you want and apply it. Then enter advanced timing and check that the refresh rate is at 60 hz or below (59. something hz). Make sure timing standard are at reduced blanking (change it if it says custom) and choose the scaling you wish from there. Worth a try. :)

I don't no why, but something's wrong. I did as you wrote but when I agree to use reduced blanking parameters goes to default. But what's more misterious when I change scaling it say that my monitor doesn't work with 18kHz/ 20Hz 1440x900 mode.

Sounds like your monitor .inf file is corrupt. Try to manually insert the information (refresh rates and other settings). What you also can do, is to use the refresh rate override in the Nvidia control panel on that particular resolution. :)

I think that I know where the problem is. When I set 1440x900 resolution max refresh rate is 60Hz (I can also chosse 59Hz). But when I set eg. 1280x720 I can set refresh rate to 60Hz of 75Hz and... even though I choose 60Hz with "Use Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling" it switches back to 75Hz and I'm unable to change it.
Would I be able to play games with Black bars?

Hi. just joined the forums since Im thinking of buying a Wide Screen monitor for my computersystem that Ill be buying shortly...
If I buy a Wide Screen monitor I want to be able to use black bars instead of having the screen streched in games that does not support wide screen.
So Im going to check with you guys here, am I able to use black bars with Ati Radeon x1900xt and a Samsung Syncmaster 940BW or maybe Syncmaster 205BW (not sure yet)?
What's the easiest and smoothest way for using black bars?
btw. is that true that there is some games that does not work with black bars at all, they Have to be streched? (heard WC3 would be a game like that)... cuz if its true, that sucks...
thanks.

:welcome Easiest way to use black bars is to get a screen that support scaling in OSD (on screen display). You can then choose there what to scale regardless of GFX card.
Its not true that some games doesn't work with black bars at all, though its true that avoiding stretching on some LCD's can be a hazzle. :)

ah thx.
Well, do you know if 940BW or 205BW supports scaling in their OSD?

I have an odd problem. I have a XFX 7900gt, and when I try to use the fixed aspect ratio scaling it tries to go the wrong way. I wind up with black bars on the top and botom, and it is even more stretched than before. Anyone else have this problem? Any thoughts?

You will get black bars on the sides and top and bottom if you choose
centered output, a lot of people have scaling issues with the 7900 cards.
If you have the classic nvidia menu look at the pic below the options and you can see what the different options does.
