Rage:The double alt tab

Rage:

The double alt tab thing is like.....: You alt-tab and select skyrim. You may get a blank/black window at this point. Then alt-tab again, cycling through your open windows and choose Skyrim again. It should work the second time.

If you still have crash problems?! I went with the original TESV.exe file and set it to allow greater than 2GB of memory and that fixed my crashes with the Large Address Aware utility. There are a few different ways to adjust that setting too.

If you need a copy of the TESV.exe original, holler. Myself or someone will set you up with it. Just make a backup if your currently used one. The reason people are using the original TESV is because we are unable to allow the memory to go higher than 2GB.. with the latest tesv.exe... it causes an error.

I am probably chiming in here out of line, I didn't read the whole dialogue... my 2 cents.

[quote]Just remember that there is a problem with come configs that crash Skyrim if your audio isn't set to 44100 khz, have you tried changing that in your sound setting under Windows?

When you ALT+TAB back to the game, you also need to ALT+TAB all the way back to it again, then you need a wait a few seconds and it will come up. I just reread your initial post and saw that you didn't mention trying the double ALT+TAB. Just trying to cover all bases. (c:

in regard to the audio, wouldn't that present a problem even if hayden's fix wasn't implemented? Just to reiterate, I can get the game to function, it just will not start up with Hayden's fix injected.

as for the "double ALT+TAB", I'm not understanding what you mean.

I use ALT+TAB (once) to leave the game, then when I try to re-initiate the game (using ALT+TAB) it basically opens a full screen black window and just hangs there (the audio continues to play. FYI.).

Can anyone help? The menus extend into the portion of the image that's covered up by bezel compensation on both the left and right side of the center screen.

Yeah I have the same problem at 3944x1600 (three 1600x1200 PPP's):

try what you will, but i just dont think a single P mode monitor is going to cut it.

i messed around with my 3x1 setup in portrait mode for a while, and while i actually did really enjoy the added height, and i moved the monitors closer so it still felt very immersive, i switched them back to L for a few reasons. one being such issues

Note: The new skyrim patch won't hit until Wednesday (tomorrow) for PC.

Any problems you are having are not related to the new patch.

Im still working well/the same with Hayden's 0.3. The 11.11b drivers did create some missing texture problems, purple trees and whatnot. Meaning to roll back to 11.11, but its not game breaking.

Fingers crossed that tomorrow's patch does not destroy Hayden's work.

No worries man! I really appreciate you taking the time!! thanks a ton!

I tried the "double ALT+TAB" as advised. I opened the game and selected my current saved game (which I hadn't done before), Upon the first ALT+TAB I got out of the game and injected the patch, then ALT+TAB'ed back to the game and it went to the "windowed black" screen as it did before, upon trying ALT+TAB again, it went back in succesfully, though as soon as i tried to go into any menu (inventory, MAP, etc.) it crashed right away.

hmmmm........ thoughts?

It sounds like something is preventing it from running, because it's modifying the memory and is being classified as spyware or something. If you have anything like Spyware Doctor or any other program that runs with real time protection, disable it or go as far as remove it, because I have seen them cause other problems for members on the Techgage forum. As far as the LAA I don't really think you need it cause you can get the game to run with out the fix, and you are running vanilla Skyrim, so texture loading wouldn't be the issue here. At this point anything else I can think of does not account for the fact you can run it with out the fixes, it has to be a third party program shutting it down because it thinks it is spyware, malware or virus. I don't think AVG is the problem or we would see a more persistent pattern with other WSGF members I think, so I really think it's something rarely used like Spyware Doctor or something close to it. I wish there another scenario I could think of that would be causing this, but I can't, sorry at this point I'm out of ideas.

seriously, i am not patching, nor am i updating my drivers. im not having hardly any issues other than a rare c2d (like maybe 1 ever 5+ hours of play).
at this point im afraid anything i may do might cause undesired effects heh.
so imma play for at least another week before i get gutsy and try to update anything :D

This is to everyone (I think I've spotted 3 of us in this thread) whose getting an instant ctd using any of Hayden's fixes. I'm afraid I don't have a solution but I thought I'd let you know that I've tried everything I can think of:

I stripped my pc of any unnecessary processes (literally everything), disabled aero and disconnected from the internet. I set my resolution to 5760 x 1080 and defaulted the Skyrim settings (double checking the prefs). I unplugged all my USB devices, except my keyboard and mouse. I uninstalled and removed my dedicated physx card. I updated my drivers (11.11b Cap 1). I disabled the LAA software. Then I set the fix and the TESV.exe to run as administrator and did so by right-clicking too.
I injected the fix and and ran the TESV.exe - in case steam was the problem :/ - and it crashed straight away, as usual; actually it was quicker, presumably since there were no background applications.
I've since cross checked the system specs of the few people who've had the problem and there doesn't seem to be any correlation beyond all being ATI users but I don't think that's the issue since they're plenty of ATI users in this thread and I doubt it'd be hardware related.

Ultimately it's beyond me, there's obviously something minutely wrong that I can't spot. Helifax's fix still works and is very good, so I'm thankful for that. Incidentally, I have removed mods and defaulted everything in prior attempts to fix this.

First of all, Hayden thank you so much, i have enjoyed this game a lot because of you!!

I have one question... I play with a gamepad and its really annoying to have to move to my keyboard every time i need to fast travel (pressing - key), have you been able to fix this issue?

THANKS

No prob Cinnabuns. I haven't seen any improvement with Skyrim, nor did it hurt anything either so that's good. I haven't tried BF3 because there are just a ton of problems with it and I haven't looked at it since Skyrim came out  . I did try Batman Arkham City, now if anyone was hoping it would fix the DX11 situation, sadly it does not. I ran in DX11 and DX9 modes, and saw no appreciable improvement, in the benchmarks sadly :( .

EDIT: Also you have to do the fix as mentioned before by helifax to get Ambient Occlusion working if you are using the LAA fix. I tried it and it worked just fine. Here is his description on what to do:

[quote]

Ok, after a bit of fooling around:)) I managed to make the 4GB version to use the nVidia 3D Profile and SLI compatibility bits:

1. Download and install nVidia Inspector
2. Start Nvidia Inspector
3. Go to the driver profile settings
4. Select the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim profile
5. Click the button that says "add application to current profile" (small icon of a window with a plus-sign)
6. Navigate to your Skyrim installation and select TESV.exe
7. Before hitting OK in the Filename field append ".4gb" so the result should be "TESV.exe.4gb"
8. HIT OK
9. HIT "Apply changes"
10. Play the GAME

AGAIN THIS VALID ONLY FOR THOSE WITH nVIDIA cards in SLI and 3D VISION (SURROUND)

Best Regards,
Helifax

Thanks for the tip. This game really needs AO! The dungeons' interiors are shaded beautifully, but the objects are just floating out there in terms of lighting. Got my driver installed and tweaked, time to give 'er a whirl.

I noticed a similar effect

I noticed a similar effect when I tried to run antialiasing on the highest setting, turning this setting down a notch fixed the problem for me.
May want to try turning the setting off and see if clears up for you.

nvidia driver 290.36 beta -

nvidia driver 290.36 beta - broke the game for me. I'm using Hayden's 0.3 patch (like it the best), but it is unlikely the patch has anything to do with it. Also using 4GB, this combo has been working great all week. Updated to the new driver beta today, now the game crawls down to 5 fps and the resolution is all wrong- 6000x1200, works fine with the 285.79 driver, but it's all stretched and jaggied now. Verified skyrimprefs.ini, also tried manually setting resolution in the 0.3 patch launcher, both results the same. Using 2x 570's.

Anyone else have results like this with the new nvidia driver?

Beany (and others). Kayden got me thinking about your issues. Can you try two more things? Firstly, I still suspect somewhere that you have some sort of anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-somethingelse or registry fixer that is doing this. I don't know why, but please see if you have any of these running (or have run them) and let me know. The second thing is entirely ATI related. Use driver 11.9 (yes you read that right), and don't use crossfire if you have two cards. Try these things and let me know!

hmm, I have a hard time editing posts on this board. Oh well, a drop in the bucket in this thread.

In Windows desktop, my monitors are being randomly cheddar'd with resolution scaling issues, obviously the driver since nothing else changed. Uninstalled, reverting to 285.79.

*Edit*
Everything is working as it should (minus Bethesda's support for the PC community that built them) after going back to the previous beta driver. I guess the latest from nvidia just isn't for me.

Thanks for trying man, I went as far as uninstalling AVG (for good measure), and still the crashing continues. I don't have any other spyware/malware software installed, SO I'm STUMPED. I have tried using Helifax's fix, it works, but the HUD isn't centered it's deviated to the left (crosshair and all). My Resolution is 5760x1200 (NO Bezel Comp.). I've tried using your (Kayden) Multi-Montior resolution files (the 5760 version) but it remains the same. Any thoughts on that?

UPDATE:
I went into the original file, and edited all the parameters that were 1743 to 1920, and all parameters that were 5230 to 5760, and that seemed to work for me, and the hotkeys for books and the map. NO more off centered HUD for me.

BTW, does anyone have any info regarding whether Xfire will ever work with this game? I hate that I have a 6990 with two GPUs on it, and I'm only getting the performance of one GPU!

Just an update - Hayden's 0.3 and up work fine now on 64 bit Windows 7. My guess is that Win7 32 bit isn't compatible with Hayden's 0.3+ app. Same hardware, same drivers (except 64 bit versions) and minimal Win7 x64 install as my Win7 32 bit setup.

All in all, many thanks Hayden!

There is no code that 32bit specific, infact the application itself is compiled as 32bit and runs in 32bit mode even on 64bit operating system as the target game (Skyrim) is also 32bit.
