You have a group of pirate shitheads. AC2 has this heavy-handed play protection that hasn't been broken yet. They are pissed off that they cannot play for free. So they fuck over the paying customers.

They usually get to play the games first and for free so pirate shitheads and their over-developed sense of entitlement get all pissed off and start DOS attacks and spamming game forums encouraging people to do the same.

Why?

To pressure Ubi into dumping the DRM so they can play for free. And who do they punish to do it? The paying customers. THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THE ONLY REASONS THESE GAMES ARE ON THE PC TO BEGIN WITH! That is how arrogant and self-entitled these pirate shitheads are.

You know, honestly, when I read about how AC2 requires online to get at your saves, I immediately started thinking of all the ways this shit could go wrong, and it just so happens, I check a week later, and here's Tanuki screaming up a storm because of the one method I could see pulling Ubisoft's pants down at the big money grubbing convention. Good for the "hackers", sorry Tanuki, but Ubisoft needs to be taught a lesson. Offsite data storage is bound to fail sooner or later, get enough overzealous people willing to make a stand and show Ubisoft what retards they are, and that's what you get. Frankly, you shouldn't be mad at them, you should be mad at Ubisoft entirely for 2 reasons.

1. They introduced a very vulnerable point in the whole system which could knock off thousands of AC2 players all around the world.
2. They didn't do shit to protect said vulnerable point.

The money made from these types of games on the PC is relatively small for Ubi.

The only result that will happen from Ubi learning a "lesson" is that they stop making PC games or treat the platform as a dumping ground for titles that no longer sell on consoles. They might abandon this form of DRM but they will try a "new and improved" one eventually.


EDIT - Also, think about what you said. Ubi needs to be taught a lesson. Obviously someone who says that has not payed for AC2 on the PC otherwise they would not be so eager to see their game broken. Why do they get to decide the worth of Ubi's system? They are not the paying customers. Let the paying customers decide if it is worth spending money on.

You want to teach Ubi a lesson, don't buy the game. Don't bork it for those who did cause it undermines your entire position.

Generally speaking Ubisofts PC ports are fairly decent, sometime even better then the original, the problem is how long after the console releases they release the PC version. Prince of Persia was a good game as well, and while its DRM freeness didn't really effect the piracy rate ultimately they still fucked up by effectively making that really annoying ending, the end, period, while on the consoles they had an extra DLC.

In short Ubisoft bad track record with the PC is there own fault by giving PC customers sub par support.

I'm pretty damned sure that the original Far Cry made Ubisoft a heck of a lot of money, but I can't think of any recently Ubisoft game that hasn't been multiplatform, and frequently had the console version come out before the PC version. The problem comes when people get impatient - many PC gamers also have consoles, so will buy the console version if that is released months earlier. I'm not saying all PC gamers own consoles, but I'd bet that a fair number of them with high-end rigs also have one or more consoles.

I'll have a gander through my PC game collection at the weekend if I have time, and see exactly how many Ubisoft games I actually own. I've got a feeling that it's just the Splinter Cell games and Far Cry, as they're the only ones that really stand out in my mind. Oh, wait, I picked up Far Cry 2 when it was cheap in HMV... although it's so pants I don't think I ever bothered to play it for more than four hours. Even my cousin got bored playing it. She doesn't get bored with any game until she's completed it. Other Ubi games I own? Assassin's Creed on the PS3. Bought because it came out on the PS3 before the PC. So I'm a case in point of a gamer who prefers PC games, but bought the console version because of the wait. Treating the platforms equally would help, I suspect - no one likes being treated like a second class citizen. ;)

I think one assumption everyone is making is that it's the pirates that are initiating the DDOS attack on the server. Who's to say that these are simply disgruntled customers who chose not to buy this particular game because of the DRM but still have some say from a patronage standpoint as to what Ubisoft should do with their games (in a sick/twisted sort of way, and this isn't the way to go about it).
