Dell 2408WFP vs U2410

Post by ViciousXUSMC »

I have a monitor delema :D

I do not think I am going to stay with my current 3 monitor setup.

2407 2408 2407

I can not get the two 2407's on the end to match the center 2408 monitor so I am going to sell the 2407's and upgrade.

Now here is the catch, I hear and think the U2410 is a better monitor than the 2408 so if I am going to do this I may as well do it right.

I just talked to Dell and they said I can return the 2408WFP without the restock fee since I want to buy another monitor in its place (we will see how easy that is to do when I actually do it since its a separate department) and I tried to talk them down to bottom dollar for the U2410 all day.

The lowest price I can get is $475.00 + tax per monitor and free shipping for 3x U24010's thats a lot more than I wanted to spend, I really like my 2408 in the middle and know I can find 2408's for under $400 and wont have to go through the return hassle of the 2408 if I just upgrade the two 2407's and use 3x 2408's instead.

So asking for forum member feedback here.

A.) Do you think $475 per monitor for a U2410 is a good price? Do you know a way to get it cheaper? (PM me if you need too)

B.) Do you think its worth the hassle and extra cost to get 3x U2410 vs just getting two more 2408WFP's?

I can snag 2408's on ebay for $450ish and use the 8% cashback and get them for under $400 w/ free ship and no tax. Thats about $100 cheaper per monitor right now if I cant find a better deal on the U2410.

my gut says that its a good deal from dell. a very good deal. Thing is though, is it worth it to you?

I would go for it, funds allowing.

"if your gonna have one, have a big one" is my motto (regards to TV's, subwoofers etc etc (nothing sexual ;)))

I agree, funds do not allow but when it comes to electronics I look at it as a long term investment. I would probably rather spend $100 more per monitor if they are going to last 3+ years as thats only $100 per year :D

Thats kinda how I talk myself into these things. So the question is really is the U2410 really that much better than the 2408?

I do not like the stand as much and I can say I really do like the 2408 I have, but I know the 2410 is supposed to have a faster response time, and more colors and possibly better view angles (not a big deal I sit infront of the monitors)

On the bad side though I know that some people complain about the screen coating and unlike the 2408 that has had 2 revisions to iron out all the kinks the U2410 is on its first release.

I think what I will do is keep my two 2407's on craigslist and hope for a buyer and then see what happens on Black Friday, maybe some good deals will come around for one of the monitors that make the purchase easier on me.

After Black Friday I'll have to make my move and decide to return the 2408 and buy 3x U2410 or just wait for the two 2407's to sell and get the 2408's at my leisure.

on paper it blows the 2408 away. I'm personally waiting for a falure, or something massivly insane to come along before i replace my NEC, funds do not allow!

Well I decided to run it out like this.

Going to try to sell the 2407's at my cost once they both sell I will try to send back the 2408 and then get the three U2410's

I'll be on the lookout for black friday deals, if a really good deal comes up I may buy the monitors before I sell the current ones.

If I cant get any buyers for the monitors then I just stick with what I have, its not terrible and it will be a lesson learned for when I upgrade the setup later in life.

I wanted to do 3x projectors as my dream setup anyways so I guess that can be the next upgrade :D

Yeah, three U2410's is my ideal setup with EyeFinity too. $475 is a great price - they're £450 here... :( (cheapest place) from Dell they're like £550. :(

good deal mate. I was thinking in my head that the 2407/8 setup was going to be a nightmare to match, I had so many problems with them that eventually they gave me a 3008 and still I think my old 2407 was better than the 2408's they kept sending me and this 3008...

Glad you are going for the new monitors though, I reckon thats a shit hot price!

Only getting them if the 2407's sell though so far no buyers and I am only asking like $300 each and they have warranty.

I got them matched a lot closer, to my supprise even while in SLS mode for eyefinity I can still use the ATI control panel to individually tweak each monitor setting.

A new setting is only avalible in SLS mode and when I turn it on for the 2408 it pretty much does a 100% match for red & blue its called "use extended display identification data (EDID) and it washes out the 2408 just enough to make a perfect match.

The greens still are my only problem, I get this bright pure green on the 2408 while I get a dull yellowish green on the two 2407's.

If I have to stay with this setup I'll be ok I got the match really close I can only see the difference if I am playing a game with a scene that has a lot of green in it or a color that uses a lot of green pigment. Even still for the most part when focusing on the center screen you dont see it.

Don't buy the 2408WFP they have shit tastic input lag. U2410 only has 15ms in game mode, 30ms in regular mode. I am definitely getting 3xU2410 myself.. just waiting for Hydra to come out and see if I should be getting that or a 5870 X2.

I dont have any lag/delay problems on my 2408, and I cant see a difference between it and the A04 2407's next to it, but I never was one to notice that kind of stuff.

Maybe if I was still playing really fast games like UT2004 I would notice it.

Update:

Got a buyer for both of the 2407WFP monitors, they are going to a new home in Canada.

Then I placed my order with Dell for the 3x U2410's they honored my previously quoted price of $475 each and free shipping, with tax it came out to like $510 or so per monitor.

I then had to spend an hour on the phone with a different department to return the 2408WFP.

I really do not like how you cant have the same person do the return as the sale, it worried me that I may get problems with the return department not honoring what the sales team said about how I would not get a penalty for return.

I had to wait on hold for nearly an hour and speak with a supervisor but I got a prepaid label for return and no restock fee. (waiting on it actually should be in my box soon)

So the budget got stretched way bigger than I wanted but lets hope these U2410's are good monitors and last me a long time to make the purchase worth it. I cant wait to see 100% identical color and brightness/contrast across all 3 of my screens :D :D

here is the most indepth review I can find: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm

I should say that they comare it to the HP LP2475w quite often as they use the same panel and stuff and in there test the HP had better contrast, better input lag, and better black level. Its also cheaper and still has a 3 year standard warranty.

I was able to find the HP from a reputable seller for $513 w/ free shipping

http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/HP_LP2475w/KD911A8ABA/U09559/froogle/

That said I think I would be a tad upset if I paid the full $600 Dell wants for the U2410 but since I got it at the same price point I do not think I will be losing any sleep over it.

great mate, really great to hear. I was worried Dell would shaft you or something. Dell lately is really awesome, or really shit, mixed bag really.

Well lets see how they go...

Maybe you have a later revision 2408 which "fixes" the problem. Anyway just look at this youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnApFzmd9NY which compares a 2408 and a ViewSonic VP2030b side-by-side and its pretty obvious the 2408 has got input lag problems.

I have a Rev A02 the newest one, it may have been fixed.

The U2410 has really good input delay on game mode but its 2-3x higher when sRGB mode that I will use.

Since its a wide color gamut monitor without the processing from sRGB mode apparently the red & green get way overblown in game mode. I suppose I'll give it a try myself to see how I like it, it maybe wont be color accurate but as long as it looks good that is all that matters. With 3 monitors changing settings/modes will probably be semi annoying so most probably I'll stick in sRGB mode.

The Dell 2408WFP is a wide color gamut monitor too, that is probably why I could not get it to match the 2407's.

Edit: just saw that video, they mentioned Rev 01 may fix that problem but I also say that is not a valid test, when having an application on more than one monitor in span mode your computer processes the information its not just instantly displayed. Atleast thats how it seems on my setup. Clone mode or best yet Clone mode with a timer would have been the proper test.

I had originally gotten mine at $549 from dell.com. After seeing this I called back in and could only get them down to $524. I'd say you $475 is a damn good price.

I work at a hotel, I have to sell rooms and do customer service type stuff so its more natural for me to be able to talk myself into good deals :D

Still I think I could have gotten lower than $475 had I had more time on my hands. The competing HP monitor is almost $475 without any kind of haggling, and I think they have a 20% bing.com cashback event coming up meaning you can get that one a lot cheaper.

I am still interested in knowing what these ultra thin bezel 23" samsung monitors are going to be like too when they are reveled.
