Game resolutions are they fixed

My question is are certain games limited to the max resolution they can display or support. For example i use the Mviewer which works great and my max resolutions my monitors support are 1600x900. I have no problem running a resolution of 4800x900 on desktop but when playing Left For Dead 2 the max resolution i can get the game to display is 3840x768.

So i was thinking maybe that is the max resolution the game supports. When i try and set it in the cfg file to 4800x900 it just resets it to a default of 800x600 with a 4:3 ratio.

Resolution support varies by game.

IIRC, LFD2 does support higher surround resolutions. Check in the multi-monitor or wiki section for verification and support.
