Woohoo! Got my steam account back! :D
Played the demo of Shift tonight with seemingly no problems apart from it's not all that good. I won't be in no rush to get it, if at all (even though my girls like to get the NFS titles for me for xmas) I will try and put them off; Grid is far far better.

Well in any event, no problems at all with Shift or RE5 here... both running at 1080p with AA and all the fixins at 50-60fps. If it is an ATI issue, I wish you guys luck in resolving it, but I just don't believe officially supported cards from the developer can be the cause of issues themselves. It's just completely nonsensical, as those would have been used for testing, and a lot of people are using them just fine.

And your card is not supported, and just because it might be faster than a supported card does not make it one... it is from a previous generation of cards.

Actually for Shift it IS supported, and I still think you are mistakenly over simplifying this.

Wow, it's not very friendly around here.

Hi, Abram,

I take your response as a humorous expression :D. I've been lurking on this forum for almost a year now. A lot of great information here! You can see from my post-count that I haven't spoken much in that year. Also, I have not posted my setups for fear of comments like the one above.

Cheers.

I was referring to RE5, which you stated your card was not supported but was faster than a supported card. I thought my specific referrence to your comment would make that obvious.

As for over-simplifying things, I thought that was what I was arguing against... "this game doesn't work with ATI cards" is a simplification, when since it works with a lot of ATI cards, the same models people have trouble with, it is obviously something more complicated, such as "ATI cards running on certain drivers with certain other drivers on the same PC" or something similar.

My point was to say we should NOT simplify the issue, rather than the opposite.

For instance, someone on nvn recently talked about Thief 3 and it not running on Win7. "Well, this game just does not work because of Win7... Direct2Drive shouldn't be selling it" he said. When I and someoen else pointed out Thief 3 does work on our Win7 computers, 64bit the same as his, he was like "oh... everyone said it just doesn't work on Win7." He didn't even try compatability or admin modes or anything, the game crashed, he read on some forum the game doesn't run on Win7, and he started complaining.

That is the kind of simplified generalization on help topics I try to avoid.

When a problem is known, it happens for all users. Sacrifice has severe issues on 64bit systems... we know it is 64bit because everyone with a 64bit OS has the same issue. Metal Gear Solid 2 doesn't work with modern Windows because of sound driver issues, we know this because to play the game on a modern OS you need to disable your sound care.

Same issues for everyone with the same hardware/OS... that is how you prove the issue is rooted in a firm problem.

..."this game doesn't work with ATI cards"

You misquoted what I said, "won't play on most ATI based rigs", is in fact what I actually said. By oversimplifying I mean you so easily assume one or a few people on ATI based rigs (as has been reported here) being able to play it automatically means ALL people on ATI based systems should. That couldn't be farther from the truth and is not only an oversimplification but a big reason games are beta tested so piss poorly anymore. You don't even acknowledge at all that there are different drivers used for different ATI GPUs like I said regarding Avivo and the workarounds I mentioned some have tried because of it.

Nor do you seem to acknowledge that some chips work better with others, and only certain games exhibit the problem because the devs have to be aware of such things during the scripting. So yeah, you're oversimplifying, and insulting my intelligence with such blanket statements as works for one, should work for all. That's the same as saying we don't know the hell how to maintain our PCs. Before you irritate me any further I'm just going to ignore any of your remarks from now on because you clearly aren't getting it.

If there was malice being what i said, you'd know it. Jsut a bit of envy poking through.

And you shouldn't have explain it - if i could swing it, I'd have a fleet of TH setups.
