Speaking of derbies, I used to hate the demolition derby races, until I realized everyone up front was just crashing into one another and basically trying to go too fast. Once I learned how to temper my speed, esp over jumps and going into turns, it became fairly easy to catch up and win.

I do get a bit of lag on derbies though, which makes it a bit hard to judge speed and timing. You also have to watch the crossover of course, or flying cars can end you chances. Demo derbies seem to be one of the most popular for the mp crowd. It's about all they talk about on the GridJoint forum.

BTW, one other tip I have for you besides picking the worst possible driver for a teammate is picking one from a country that has tracks you do well on. I usually go with that Japanese guy Uze something I think. I usually ace all the Japanese tracks and like most of them.

I even went through all the Yokohama industrial park tracks in instant action mode so I could purposely put myself at the back of the grid on extreme. Those are really fun tracks, I love the one where you drive through a building.

Every other country's tracks Uze sucks at, so I don't have to worry about him getting in my way, except for having to pass him at the start when he's in front of me in the grid. He's good at most Japanese tracks, except not too good at the night time downtown street courses for some reason. Maybe it's just that they're so easy to win I get too far ahead for him to catch up.

As for Grid placement, if by randomized you mean in some races you're in a different position than others, I don't necessarily call that randomized placement. I've played Grid sp through several times and invariably within the same difficulty level you always get positioned in the same spot for a given race, even though the position varies from race type to race type.

I've also noticed that you do indeed consistently go back in the grid as difficulty level goes up, it wouldn't make sense any other way. Conversely however, for some odd reason they'll place you at or near the back on certain races that are very hard to win, yet put you in the pole position in ones that are extremely easy to win, such as the non Le Mans races you do in the Audi R10. That car combined with pole position = easy win on any track.

lol sorry but I disagree. I just started about 15 (if not more) times the same race (F3 race where you're against Ravenwest) to get a better placement for my team mate Tom Rockford, in simple difficulty with catch-up disabled
It's absolutely not like you say, placement is actually random with probably modifiers to the randomness (like ravenwest getting more chance to be in the first 5 places). I was placed two times 7th the other times between 9th & 12th. So no you don't get positioned into the same spot for a given race in a given difficulty.

to test restarting a race just pause the game right after the race started & return to the garage then go back & load the game back, it will re-randomize placement.

I wonder if there is a difference between the randomisation in the US and EU localisations?

No random grid placings for pirates. *BahahahahAHAhahahahAHAh* Oh those melancholic developers these days.

Pirates?, LOL, I'm not the one claiming the game's not working right after modding it. I'm playing the stock retail version. That disagreeing would sound a bit more valid if you hadn't hacked into the files. Alas, but I'm done arguing this back and forth. The game's fun enough for me and not nearly as big a surprise each time I play it as it's being made to sound here.

The thread is about DiRT 2 anyway, not Grid.

would be a valid point if it wasn't the same before modding it and if I had changed that kind of file ! ;)
and hacking != modding :P

but you're right I should probably stop talking about GRID in a Dirt 2 thread

Just because you change a different kind of AI file doesn't mean it can't adversely affect AI in general. You never know with scripting sometimes, esp AI because AI triggers are linked like chains and can have a domino effect when you change one part of it.

AI modding was always the hardest part of using Sandbox 2 for Crysis for me, never could get it to work consistently, even though the editor is very easy to use and showed different (eg: successful) results vs what I got in game.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the 3rd generation of the Ego engine DiRT 2 uses. I'm thinking it may even run more efficiently than Grid because for one thing, there will probably be less car to car and car to obstacle contact going on, which is part of what made the frame rates drop at times in Grid.

As am I. I basically bought my wheel just for DiRT, the only other game that i have used it with so far is Grid.

Grid both looks better and runs MUCH better on my machine, so I do have high hopes for DiRT 2.

I wanted to get both of those games, yay for staying behind the curve, DIRT is now 8 bucks new for PC at gamestop =P

Grid is 15 bucks =P

Grid is available locally, unfortunately Dirt would require a drive of like 10 miles to get to a store with it.

Newegg is like 15 and 30 bucks respectively =P

Unfortunately you're also a bit behind the curve on system spec, if you still have the one listed in your sig. You may be able to play Grid OK, but it would probably struggle with the multi vehicle races in DiRT.
