That goes hand-n-hand with catch-up, if they get ahead they slow down, if they get behind they speed up.
Well like I said, it may have just been that is was on easy mode. Most of the gameplay vids I've seen seem to be a test demo some people had privy to and they were smacking walls a lot. LOL

I just have to say one more time, I am really impressed that they have Ken Block as the focus for the game. A true follow up to Colin MacRae.

Yeah and it's amazing Ken's only been doing it since 2005. I like the Segway stuntman part. LOL

Here's the DiRT 2 interview he did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7R9g4BKkic

Yeah that one in the game he cracked up on must be one of the ones the dev was talking about in an interview. You have to hit some of the jumps just right to keep from wiping out.

You have to wonder with those stunt videos they show, how much money they've spent on totaled cars. At some point the sponsors must be biting their nails every time the car is flying over a monster jump. Those little pro rally cars are pretty spendy.

The game is gonna be fantastic. Maybe they could combine the Segway stunts with jumps for some humorous outtakes. "Mall Cop" Kevin James doing 360s off the ramp. LOL

Well the jumps that he showed are his practice jumps, not strictly for show, he does those jumps with cameras off nearly every day, its part of his practice course. I'm sure they bight their nails every time he gets in the car and turns on the engine. hehe

... grid placement. It is not totally random though, if you notice they always place you farther back as you step up in difficulty level.

well my experience show me that it's rather random except for some teams like ravenwest which get a boost of some sort.
you can randomize the starting placement again by restarting the whole game (not the race) and having tried several difficulties, I didn't really notice a better placement on the lowest difficulty settings.likewise the highest difficulties can still place you 1st ...

I feel a qualification system should be a career mode option vs forced though,

agreed, one word : "Moto GP URT3" you can bypass qualification but then you're last on the grid..

Another thing I really don't like about Grid is the contact physics between vehicles. You so much as lightly graze a car and you're stuck to it like glue, being unable to pull away from it. Only slamming on the brakes works to do so. The other car will invariably draw you into his straight into the wall line as if merely for touching sides you've both lost complete control of the car.

hum, I play with a joystick and yes there's a "pull" of some sort when you touch other vehicles , however I feel like it's quite slight and I don't need to brake to get out of it at all! That said, one need to check the geometry of his car against the geometry of AIs, for example it's quite easy to get "stuck" in opponents cars with some cars a bit "F1" shaped (external wheels).

Ugh, So this post and its quote's discuss two of the things that I dislike the most in GRID, Starting position, I seem to ALWAYS start 9th (in a 12 player race), it does not seem to be random what so ever for me. Now you might be wondering why I am complaining about 9th (I most definitely would not want to play qualifications, I feel the races are already too long (In that they are almost all tournament's I have to place first in 3 races to get first) I would not like a fourth race... Skipable would be nice, it would give the best of both worlds, I wouldn't feel as bad starting [near] last if I new that I could start first somehow.

Now the reason why I dislike starting near last is simply why I find DiRT more enjoyable, the AI are complete morons as you guys have been discussing. 90% of my restarts are when I am not in first place. Which basically means once I get into first, I stay in first and its all nice and smooth, but when I am not in first, the AI acts like its a fricken demolition derby. Ive had the AI pull the PIT maneuver on me.

I'm really surprised neither of you mention teammates smacking you too much in the dislikes for Grid. It is by far one of THE most annoying things for me. At times it's as if he'll intentionally bump you from behind whilst trying to steer around you, as if to make you spin out like cops do speeders on the highway. LOL

Then again, speaking of poor contact physics like with the slight side touching I mentioned, there's also the fact that the contact physcis in Grid are not precise proximity wise. By that I mean you often get the physics of contact before there is actual touching, as if the game inaccurately predicts contact. Many have complained about this. I've also had the game crash on numerous occasions just before hitting something.

As for Grid placement, if by randomized you mean in some races you're in a different position than others, I don't necessarily call that randomized placement. I've played Grid sp through several times and invariably within the same difficulty level you always get positioned in the same spot for a given race, even though the position varies from race type to race type.

I've also noticed that you do indeed consistently go back in the grid as difficulty level goes up, it wouldn't make sense any other way. Conversely however, for some odd reason they'll place you at or near the back on certain races that are very hard to win, yet put you in the pole position in ones that are extremely easy to win, such as the non Le Mans races you do in the Audi R10. That car combined with pole position = easy win on any track.

Heh thats kind of what I was talking about with the Destruction Derby, But seriously team mates are easily the worst. Also I noticed something weird, I was first, My team mate was second, everyone else is 3+ seconds behind me, meaning that I cant see them on the minimap. My team mate passes me gets into first then all a sudden everyone is right on my ass until the next turn where I overtake my teammate and everyone else seems to drop back again.

But yeah I was on the last lap with 15 seconds or so to go, and my teammate comes up and pulls a PIT on me which ends up putting me in last place...

Also whats up with various tilesets (grass etc) being impossible to drive on? I mean I dont drive race cars or anything but I have started cars on grass and gravel many many times, and it is NOT bloody impossible to start moving on.
