crosshair (kind of) missing in Portal

I can see the crosshair but the orange/blue banana shaped things around the crosshair are missing.

Setup:

Radeon HD 5870
5040x1050

Steam/Portal up to date.

This is an issue that is not just limited to Portal. The crosshair is also borked in Half Life 2. There is no known fix for Portal.

This may be a long shot, but... Maybe there is a solution similar to the L4D hud fix.
