I finally upgraded my 7900GS to an 8800GT! I teared up a little when I ran Stalker. :D

It's also great fun to play Half-Life 2 with everything maxed out at over 100 fps. :P

Which brand/version did you get? I read somewhere that some of the 8800s have bigger, quieter fans now that cool just as well as the old ones. Not sure if it's the ones with the G92 GPU or the old style ones though.

Nice. :) I recently moved from an X1950XTX to a (temporary) 8800GT, and seeing framerates nearly triple at the same settings was quite impressive.

does this mod add that much to the experience? i've bought the orange box and have finished the main game + ep1 and i'm around half-way through ep2. i've also just done some major upgrading to my pc. from a 2 gig amd64 3800 with a 7900 card, to an intel q6600 with a 9600gt and 8 gig of ram.

is it worth it to install this mod, and i will it mess up steam in any way?

edit: and which is the best one to get? a quick google returns a lot of different options.

You want either CM7 or CM8 BETA.

CM7 here:
http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/Fakefactorys_Cinematic_Mod_V70_Part_16;88111
CM8 BETA here:
http://halflife2.filefront.com/file/Fakefactorys_Cinematic_Mod_V80_Part_16;89942

CM8 is currently in beta so I downloaded CM7.

I have not yet played the mod, my new computer is not here yet. But I have downloaded the CM7 mod to my HDD waiting for my new computer.

You will need to have a 64bit system with at least 3 GB ram. This is because the mod loads 2GB texture data into ram at launch and WIN32 has problems with programs addressing more than 2GB silly Microsoft.

From what I understand you will see drastic visual improvements, and little details in the textures that didn't make it into the original game which are supposed to be really cool if you like looking at everything close.

As I understand it both 32bit and 64bit have '2gb issues'. The main advantage of being under 64bit is that you can have a full 4gb total which in turn means an app has a full 2gb to mess around with. I remember reading something about max any app. can use at once is 2gb.

If the app was coded as a 32 bit app, then yes, it doesn't matter what ##-bit your windows is. It's down to the application. If you are playing on a 64 bit windows with a 64 bit game however, the RAM it can offer goes on basically forever. However, I don't know of ANY games that have made a 64-bit version. Not enough people have 64 bit windows to play the game as it wouldn't work in 32-bit.

The only ones I know of are:
UT2004: unable to play due to constant crashes
Farcry patch: not really 64bit that I've heard
One of those battleship 3000 or whatnot things.

The Cinematic Mod looks awesome, but the last time I looked at it, I didn't like the way Alyx was changed. Flashes of lacy bra material might get all of the teenagers who've never seen a real woman naked going... but jeez... the almost-tomboy Alyx should not look like a hooker with a boob and lip-job, no matter how "classy" it tries to be. :(

i've just been looking at the site and my first thought was that they had turned alyx into stripper-alyx.

The thing with most models is you get to pick and choose the ones you want :)

So you still could pick the default alex, or the High Res version of her, Or one of the many alternate outfits/faces.

Honestly I don't really care what Alyx looks like (altho her frikin huge boobs and lips make it difficult to believe that the mosddel fits the character) and I am really annoyed when people complain about a toggle-able feature.

Having basically looked at the 'advertising' screenshots, and gone, "Urgh, that Alyx looks terrible!" I did not know that slutty!hooker!Alyx was a toggle-able feature.

Might encourage me to actually try the thing now.

As someone more famous then me once said:
If you can do better, do so, else, shut up.

Not as nice as I'd put it either :). Point is, you could always pick up the tools to make a better model/skin. It's easy to comment, hard to actually sit and do something about it.

And no, I ain't free of commenting on things like that myself.

Honestly after all the work they put in such a mod, they should be applauded, and by all means if you can do better do so.

Heck, I hate HL, only reason I have both v1 and v2 are because they were video card bundles. And even I got myself to play HL2 when I came around that mod for it.

Come to think of it, I don't think a single game I've ever had with a video card has been one I'd pick up myself, I still have an untouched stalker one most recently.

I have used the lower file size version of the FakeFactory Cinematic mod and I thought the textures were noticeably better, including Alyx. You so much as make someone's skin look smoother and more responsive to light and suddenly you get all these people saying it looks horrible, plastic, slutty, etc, I just don't get it. Some other noticeable changes are the wall and crate textures, quite a difference. It does take a hefty GPU and VRAM to run it though.

that's not the point at all i was trying to make. my point was that valve designed the alyx character to appear like a real life person with real life proportions. the screenshots of this new version seemed to make her look less real and more like the typical big boobed bimbo prevelant in so many other video games. so many, in fact, it's not worth my time naming them.

anyway, i'm downloading it now to check it out.

Don't mean to sound rude but that explanation makes even less sense. I could understand to a degree if someone is used to brushed and/or less resolute textures saying the mod makes her skin look plastic due to more reflection, but proportion wise she's just the same. The mod does no shape changing whatsoever.

What you're doing by saying that is blaming the higher res textures for more accurately showing light and shadow detail, which in turn give more depth effect revealing shapes better. It's absurd really, just try it and stop gawking at the pics. You may end up liking it better. If not I can only say you are one of the many whom are conditioned to and therefore to some degree confused by lower texture levels.

To those whom are unfamiliar with this mod and so as to not confuse anyone reading some of the above comments, this mod only gives the textures in the game higher resolution. It merely reveals to the naked eye what can't be seen with the default game textures. Such work should be applauded. If your system can handle it, there's no reason not to try it.
