I don't see why it's complicated... Nations is the freeware, United is the retail game... no matter what they add to the end of them, this is still true.

I concur.

What, numbers weren't good enough for these guys?
 I'm afraid numbers would only add to the chaos. Nadeo likes to issue an updated/expanded version of their game when a newer title is released. This may be confusing but it's also pretty nice ;)

Each title in the series has had its "updated contents" patch, which typically adds new challenges and slightly updated graphics to an existing game. Hence historically:

1. Trackmania -> Trackmania Original
2. Trackmania Sunrise -> TM Sunrise Extreme
3a. Trackmania United -> TMU Forever

3b. Trackmania Nations, free standalone w/ only one type of car/environment (Stadium) -> TMN Forever

So we're at Trackmania '3' and if you don't find TMUF in stores you can always apply the Forever update to your TMU game.

Nice one scavvenjahh!
That's cleared it up nicely.

I'm having a good time with this, I like the fact that everyone has identical cars - it means you can install the game and click Play Online straight away and be able to realistically compete.
Very accessible and works with the 360 controller, so relaxing too.

Same. D:
I might be better if I got my wireless 360 controller to work, but that's a story for a different day.

Most defiantly use a controller if you have one, Using the keyboard or a wheel is horrible with this game.

Im surprisingly good with keyboard, I use keyboard for just about all racing games so I seem to be decent with it.

I may have to play you sometime ;)

Do they all have this cramped feeling that I'm getting with the Steam version of Forever? I mean come on: racing, with formula one cars, in a stadium?

That ain't quite formula one actually... Trackmania is basically all about designing crazy fantasy race tracks (with jumps, obstacles, turbo zones, traps, loops...), then challenge the clock/other players on them.

I'd advise you to grab a demo of one of the former titles and check the feel of the other environments if you ain't too familiar with this particular racing game, it's definitely worth it 8)

And folks, don't think you suck just because you can't finish a lap or beat the Gold Medal guy on your first few tries, this ain't your average racing game ;)

(Should I add... I suck too)
