best car racing game for the TH2G

Post by luvmyfs »

I just got my TH2G Digital 2 weeks ago and am new to the forum. I am a flight simulator fanatic and have a yoke and pedals setup. Looking to expand my interests to car racing.

Of all the car racing games that TH2G supports, which one would you recommend I purchase?

I like to play Test Drive Unlimited with a Logitech G25 racing wheel.. it's SWEET..
The game has a few bugs :( but so far it's the best game I found for the setup...

I hear LIVE FOR SPEED is also pretty cool but I have not tried it myself yet.. there's a demo for it, I will try it later this week.

Need for Speed Most Wanted is also a fun game.

First off, we need to clarify. Are you looking for a car racing game, or a car racing simulator? As you know from you flight simming, the former has a primary focus on graphics, fun, and eye candy. The latter has a focus on physics, setup, race strategy, driving style, etc. Both have their place.

Serious racing sims include rFactor, GTL, GTR2, RACE, Live For Speed, Richard Burns Rally, and Grand Prix Legends. Racing games are dominated by the Need for Speed Series, but also include Colin McRae: Dirt and others. Test Drive Unlimited is sort of halfway between the two genres.

IMO rFactor hands down has the best triplehead support in a racing sim. The HUD does not stretch, you have control of eyepoint position in-car, you have control of the FOV at a mouse click, and best of all, it supports a feature called "multiview" (which you can read about in this thread). GTL works pretty well in triplehead, GTR2 has some issues online at higher triplehead resolutions but there are reports it works ok at 2400x600, and I don't know about RACE. All of the above games are based on the Image Space Incorporated gMotor2 engine.

Live for Speed I don't know about in TripleHead, Richard Burns Rally looks great in the screenshots and videos that I saw but I was never able to get it working right, and Grand Prix Legends works quite well with a few quirks and is very impressive in triplehead.

I don't have many racing games, but I do have Need For Speed: Most Wanted and it is very good fun, especially the police chases. I run it in single-screen, though, because the stretched HUD really bugs me; my driving in the game relies heavily on the overlay map, which doesn't do too well when all stretched out. I don't have any other driving games, but I believe Test Drive Unlimited works pretty well in triplehead.

Geoff Crammonds GP4 is awesome! Modded with either the 2006 or 2007 season, there's nothing like it! It has a head tilt function similar to a padlock view in flight sims that allows you to look into the corner as you drive the car round to meet your field of view. Amazing! It is very hardcore tho.....

GTR2, though dated, is the best racing sim there is IMO. Supports TH2G- although I haven't tried it yet cos I just got my TH2G- and basic TrackIR, which every self respecting flt sim buff should have
If I just want a blast I use DiRT with all its different types of racing but I dunno if it will ever support TH2G

Advantages of both.....
Hmmm, well I have had TrIR4 for a while and use it mainly in Open Falcon, IL2 and ArmA (which gives you a huge advantage!) but also when I play GTR2. However I have literally just got my TH2G today so I cannot talk from experience BUT having used the 24' Dell and TrIR I am going to guess. TH2G just means a bigger screen, better than a 17, 19, 24 or (definitely for driving where your vertical view doesn't matter) arguably 30 inch screen. TrIR lets you move your view, which is not needed as much with the widest of screens but will still be useful. You can see things that are abeam and even slightly behind your car/jet/very easily killed little guy! TH2G does not give you that just a greater FOV.
Now this is all what I am hoping when I use both together, still not trialed- I am STALKERing at the mo, but I will get back on TrIR/TH2G combo latter if you want
Sorry it is not a definitive answer
Cheers

I've got one, too. :)

GTR2 dated? It was released in September 2006, so I'd hardly called it dated...

TrackIR and triplehead gaming - no reason not to have both. No, you don't "need" TrackIR when gaming in triplehead like you "need" it when you play on a single screen, but it's still nice to have. I find myself not using it when driving normally, but when I spin I can look over my shoulder before I get back on track, at the start of a race I can position my view as necessary to see the lights (in a tin top car this cockpit structure is often in the way), and I can better judge side-by-side racing with the TrackIR.

Keep in mind that, if you use bezel management with the digital TripleHead2Go, TrackIR is necessary to easily "look around" your bezels.

They are idiosyncratic but great, so real- brings back memories of the F3! I am now waiting on my U2NXT mod, in production now! 8)

Really? OK then, it looks dated, especially when you compare it to something like DiRT (why the capital D, R and T? S.T.A.L.K.E.R, F.E.A.R, F.F.S!)

Are we talking about the same game here? Devloper's website:

Screenshots:

IMO GTR2 is the best-looking racing sim out there. Perhaps you're thinking of Grand Prix Legends? That was released in 1998, can look pretty good considering that (with lots of mods), but still understandably certain aspects of the game appear dated.

Your right, JKeefe, I have been playing dIRt for a while and my memory was clouded by it's beauty! GTR2 looks alot better than I remember, played it last night. I last played before I upgraded to 8800 and had the settings MUCH lower (probably to low!) I am gonna play it again tonight.
I am still rubbish at it though! But racing games ae fun even when you come last.....
