Call of Duty 2 WS discussion / help

My specs are

AMD Athlon 3500+ venice
1gb Patriot 2-3-2-5
7800GT CO
Monitor : Sony fw900

Im getting bad frames when i run COD 2 at

1600x1024
NO AA
NO AF
Texture Quality : Extra
Lights - Medium

I get an avg of 20-30 FPS. Is this normal?

Other games im running like butter at the same Resolution

Fear i run the same res 1600x1024 with NoAA and 8xAF and get 40-50fps
FarCry i run 1900x1200 with 4AA and 8AF and get 60+FPS

What are your widescreen specs for COD2? Is 1600x1024 the lowest res for WS the game supports?

I don't have the full version, but in the demo, my frame rate goes from 10FPS to 60FPS if I force DirectX 7 mode. The option should be in one of the main options menus.

I´m curious how it is DX7 gives you better performance than DX9. It shouldn´t even work with anything less than DX9c.

That's easy. The DX9 effects are EXTREMELY poorly optimized and cause massive slowdown. Forcing DX7 mode simply disables the DX9 effects, eliminating the slowdown.

FYI, forcing DX7 mode is not the same as using DirectX 7. You're still using DirectX 9.0c, you still have DirectX 9.0c installed. It's just that all of the effects that are in DirectX 9 that were not available in DirectX 7 do not get used.

OK, thanks for the info. Backwards compatibility I guess.

The DirectX numbers represent versions, not sequels. DX9 is basically DX7 with basic and advanced pixel shader functions added. DX7's main new technique was hardware TnL, and the hardware TnL functions in DX9 are exactly the same as the hardware TnL functions in DX7. Furthermore, every DX9 game out there uses DX7 hardware TnL functions.

Well that definatly did the trick, thanks, but how come it runs like crap with direct x9 on? I can barely play it at 1024x768... now with directx 7 i can run the Highest widescreen Res and 4xAA. Now i understand that directx9 looks better, but i have a 7800gt co, shouldnt it play it above 30fps?

Just out of interest ...

I run the game 1920x1200 everything at max ... 2xAA using DX9 ... FPS 50 to 60 ... (specs below)
It seems to me that a lot of new games seem to require top end systems to use all the eye candy.

There's a good Tweak Guide here ... http://www.tweakguides.com/COD2_1.html

On page 10 there is a section called "Call of Duty 2 FPS Boost" it's worth a read ... you never know ... :)

DX9 Isn't The Problem

Post by Antario »

Dx9 isn't flawed it's the your hardware/drivers/etc. If you don't have Dx9c drivers for your vid/soundcard then you won't be able to fully utilize all the Dx9 effects.

I just updated my system again to 2gigs of memory and oc'd my new 3700 San Diego to 2.6ghz, also replaced 6800GT with a 7800GT and COD2 runs like butter at 1680x1050. And that's with every single option at High or Max'd.
