Why cant I add my fifth monitor with two identical vid cards

Post by Avatar72 »

I have two 6950s. On one card, I have 3 24" monitors running at 5760x1200. So eyefinity is working with an active dp. I also have a fourth lower resolution monitor running on it. Its recognized by the CCC and the dektop is extended to it.

On the second card, I have another low reolution monitor which is recongnized by CCC but it wont allow me to extend the dekstop to it. When I try, it says "This operation is not supported based on current display configuration. For more details, please see help."
The windows display app will allow me to select extend but then it wont allow me to apply the setting. It just say sit cant save the setting.

Im running CCC 11.1 and Win7 64 bit. I do have an active dp on my eyefinity. I'm not running in crossfire currently but I do have the cable running inside the desktop in case I want to turn it on where I would just turn off the 4th and 5th monitor. I read 5 monitors is feasible as long as I'm not running crossfire.

So what am I doing wrong?

PS. The second card is connected via DVI-I to VGA. Both smaller monitors are VGA only.

Try moving it to the other DVI port.

I've tried that, the other DVI port is DVI-D. This wont work for VGA monitors.

Okay, That's what I was wondering. I'm not sure how to get this to work.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I've been at this for three weeks now.

your pic looks like you have a group and are trying to extend other monitors onto it
disable group
make 1 monitor primary
click on next monitor select extend

Isnt grouping required for eyefinity though? I wasnt able to get any game working with eyefinity until I grouped the three main 24" monitors.

oh yes, but you wont get 5 desktops with eyefinity
you need 2 settings, an eyefinity one for your games and a 5 monitor extended desktop for windows

edit: can you disable all groups the create a 2 monitor group with the 2 monitors your having probs with

Thats the predicament I'm in. I actually do need the 5 monitors, just for A single game...not all games. I'm playing DCS A:10. The idea is to get the 3 24" monitors for the cockpit view and the two 8" monitors will export the Multi Function Displays which I can set within the game. This might be a bit confusing. I just need to be able to dsignate the two extra 8" displays in CCC while running eyefinity and place them below the main display. I can get the same to display a particular section in the cockpit to these displays then using a config file.
So the two 8" displays need to be turned on and added the the desktop. It sounds like you saying I can't do this.

oh god im not sure to be honest
have you tried moving the 8inch lcd so you have both of them on the same card ?

ps: found this quote in a review
"If a hub isn’t available and daisy chaining not feasible, the 5 ports can still support up to 4 displays in Eyefinity as illustrated at the back of the box."

ok this is weird according to amd 5 monitors are not supported but 6 monitors are ???

That's old information, it only took like a year of badgering to get support. 5x1 is now supported, albeit only on the 5870 Eyefinity 6 card. But when the HUBs are released, the other 6000 series cards will get support. the 6990 also has 4 mini DP and 1 Dual-link DVI, so it support 5x1 (but isn't released *le sigh*).
