Just used 3D Vision setup.... WOW!

Post by BHetrick »

Before I get going, I want to mention that I just built my gaming pc ~ 2 months ago.

Well, for the past couple months I've been running 3- Samsung P2540 monitors in Eyefinity through a single XFX HD 5870. I just love surround gaming, but the single 5870 wasn't cutting it. I wanted the eye candy in Bad Company 2 and Metro 2033, not to mention Crysis 2 which is coming out soon.

So while wanting to upgrade my card, I also wanted to go 3D. I was looking around hoping for an ati solution, but a couple members suggested going the nvidia route.

So long story short, I ordered 2- Gigabyte GTX 480's. And of course this also required a larger psu, larger case, and a new mobo. Now, because of what I just spend a couple months ago building this rig, buying these upgrades was about all I could get for now.

So my parts arrived Wednesday and I was able to get the pc up and running.

Wednesday morning I was looking at all the toys ups just dropped off and knew I couldn't wait. So I jumped online and ordered an Acer gd235hz and the nvidia 3d vision glasses kit (I just didn't tell the wife).

Those arrived today. I got everything setup and started out with BC2. Of course I was limited to playing on a single monitor, but wow is it impressive. And then I tried Metro. That took a little Googling to get it running right, but with the same results. I am just really impressed with how good the 3d vision looks. I even did some bc2 multiplayer. That took a little getting use to with the crosshairs "floating" out in front, but I actually did pretty good.

Now I need 2 more Acers. I put my 3 Sams, 5870, and displayport adapter up on Craigslist and Ebay. So once I sell those off I'll be able to order the other 2 monitors.

Awesome setup! Those sure are powerful cards and that acer monitor is downright sexy. You should post some vids once you get the other two acers in

Very nice setup! I have a 5970 with a 250gts for physx. Was thinking of going to 480 in sli myself. I wish my mobo had more space between the 2 cards. I only have about 3/8 of an inch between the two cards. Asus p6x58d premium. Your board setup looks perfect for sli. I hope that the 480 refresh is a little more like the 460 as far as temps go.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I'm using Afterburner to control the fans. I didn't feel comfortable just letting them run on auto after reading all the other comments about the 480's and their heat. I decided to run it on air for a bit and see if the heat & fan noise would necessitate going to water. And so far everything's been fine.

As for the 3D, I'm loving it. I didn't have any racing games. I've actually been thinking of picking up a wheel ever since I set up Eyefinity. But I installed Flatout, which looks excellent in 3D, with a controller.

Probably my only issue so far is the increased darkness the glasses add. I installed AvP, which also looks great (3D-wise) but it's just too dark. Metro was also dark but I adjusted the gamma and that really helped for it, but AvP didn't have any useful video adjustments.

It is not just the glasses causing it, but I know what you mean. I think that is one of the things holding 3D back at the moment.

Geez. I didn't know 3d would run lower than 120hz. I'll try it; thanks.

Just finished up making a new desk to fit all my crap on. I still have to clean up the wires, but at least everything fits now.

Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier. I'm more fond of the Cherry Wheat, though.
