Post subject:  Ridiculous Question, but here goes...

Hi,

Firstly, I should state the obvious, I'm a multi-display gaming wanna-be at this point, but, I have big plans. Those plans include 3 x Dell UltraSharp 32 Ultra HD in portrait mode.

So, my questions is this:

1. Can it be done?
1a. If so, what GPU setup would be required to use the maximum res? (I believe it would be 6480 x 3840)?

2. In your expert opinions, would I be able to achieve a relatively seamless transition between the displays by simply removing the bezels?

Cheers,
Arthur

The pure resolution shouldn't be the problem, Eyefinity supports up to 12k x 12k resolutions.
The problem I see is how the monitors handle the inputs. I don't know about the Dell, but most 4k monitors use two inputs to achieve the resolution. So having three of those means 6 outputs on the video card already. It is possible to have that on a single card, but my bet would be that you are running into troubles with signal synchronisation, tearing etc.

And of course you would need an massive amout of horse-power to drive this resolution. I doubt that even tripple-SLI Titan Blacks could deliver a decent framerate in games like BF4 or upcoming titles with highest settings (Which is what I prefer... Your mileage may vary here).

IT CAN BE DONE! But it's going to be a little hard for you.

Here's a link to a thread about someone doing similar with 3x Dell UP2414Q's.

You can do it on either AMD or nVidia Hardware, but it's going to have different caveats to them. I'm also going to assume you want to run all the monitors at 60Hz, because if you want to run them at 30Hz, you have much more options. 30 Hz sucks though.

For nVidia, it's going to require 3 graphics cards, all with 1.2 DisplayPorts. Depending on your budget, I'd go with 3x780Ti's. Each monitor will be connected to each card, and then surround would be able to be enabled.

For AMD, you'll need a card with 3 x 1.2 displayports. This is the hard part because as far as I know, there are only a handful of 280x's, 7970's, 7990's, 6990's, 6950's, 6970's, 7870's, 7750's and 7790's. If you notice, there are no high end modern gpus in that list. Here's a list of graphics cards I put together.

WOW.

What is the app being used that shows all the info in the upper left hand corner? I'm interesting in displaying VRAM used for some testing.
