Hi everyone,

since my ASUS GTX670 (2GB) doesnt provie enough power for games like Crysis 3 or Tomb Raider to be played at Full Graphix, i decided to get myself a new card. My giggest question is now whyt card (what a surprise...)
Im stuck with the GTX680 (4GB) or the HD7970 (6GB)
Im told, that VRAM is very important in multi-mon-gaming.
Since this both cards nearby cost the same amount of money and have nearby the same power, its just the question of the memory. Is there any profit with 6GB instead of 4GB? Or is 4GB just enough? Will i recognize the difference? (e.g. in my fps?)

(And btw: no i cant afford SLI or crossfire at the moment xD)
(Sry for my english, im german...)
Chris

edit: and what will run better with multi gpu when i get a 2nd card in 3-4 months? sli or crossfire? i've read, that crossfire is way more efficient but has bigger issues...)

At the moment with games being mainly 32bit you are limited to 4GB for a game anyway. Whether there is overhead on the OS then loading a game I don't know but it's not going to equate to 2GB worth.

This was discussed in another thread with regards to 3x27" monitors at 2560x1440 each here

Huh ? I tought 4gb Limit wouldn't affect VRAM ?
At least i've seen 5.5GB VRAM in Skyrim with a Titan!

IMHO 79706gb! AMD scales better with higher resolutions.

Thats what i thought too.

The best thing would be if someone could post the value from gpuz how much vram a game uses. Eg. I use 2022 mb vram during tomb raider. (Cause i only have 2gb)

Haldi, thank u for your post, but, no offence, could you prove that with any article or benchmark? That would really help me out.

Chris

I was only going by what DigiHound said, up until your post I had nothing else to go on and haven't seen any poblished numbers on VRAM usage in game on a Titan. As it's one of the first cards over 4GB apart from some people "saying" it can or can't I don't know.

If you have any links that would help me loads

You see, the thing i don't get about the 32bit Programms is that... you can maximum have 4GB Ram!? so i have 2x2GB RAM in my computer... and 2x3GB VRAM GPU... so how the hell does this 4gb Limit work? 4gb on RAM and 4GB on VRAM total oder 4GB Per GPU or 4GB RAM total Limit? So when the System RAM is 2gb you have 2gb GPU VRAM, with crossfire 1GB per GPU or what?

Being a developer but not a games developer or someone who ever hits that much memory apart from having a sql instance in memory I'm not too sure either.

My understanding was 4GB per storage unit per program. Windows has to be 64bit to see more than 4GB, but what I thought if you had 8GB was that if windows is using 2GB of RAM on it's own a 32bit program would still be able to reference 4GB as you have 6GB remaining. but that program could reference 4GB of RAM and 4GB of VRAM....

Someone please call "bullshit" if I'm wrong or we both are.
