Hi first time poster, looonnngggg time lurker. I've decided to take the plunge into triple monitor gaming. My current system is a i7 875K@ 4.15 (water) on a MSI P55-GD65. My monitor is a HP LP2475w (1920x1200) which I'm adding two more of the same to. My current video card is an old 4870 512MB. And finally I have an Corsair 1200AX so PSU needs shouldn't be an issue. So it's pretty obvious that I'm going to need a new video card and I'm waiting for 28nm generation to drop before pulling the pin. My only problem is how much video card will I need for games like BF3 and Skyrim running at around 6000x1200 allowing for bezel comp and with fairly high visuals (of course the higher the better). I know that my CPU contains the PCIe lanes for graphics, but I've done some research and found a NCIX/Linus video showing little difference in 3Dmark11 with a 6990 running x16, x8, or even x4. So I'm thinking about grabbing a 7970 when I can and then either going with another for CF or even a 7990 for tri CF when I can get one in March. So does that sound good or should I wait and just get a 7990 when it comes out? |

I'd never again buy a Dual GPU Card! I had a 3870X2 for 2 years, but thats when i was unaware of Technical details about the card and not into OC. A Dual GPU Card Produces way more heath than a single one! You will see this that A: you can't overclock as much as a single card. and B: The Cooler will be much louder! Your CPU supports 16 PCI-E 2.0 Lanes. So you can run 1x16, 2x8 or maybe 1x8 + 2x4 depending on your mainboard. With a HD6990 and 4x PCI-E 2.0 you will have something bout 3-4% Performance drop compared to 8x or 16x! With a 6970 its 0-1% ! So buying a HD7970 when it releases might be the smartest choice. Works fine for Tripple Monitor. IF you need the Power you can deside if you'll go with Just Crossfire or wait until March and buy a 6990 for Tripple fire! Me myself i'll try to catch 3 HD7970 right when they release, last time "brack" had 10 pieces of HD6970 two days after release! And because i like it cool i'm going for Water cooling if someone finaly releases a water block for 7970 ;) guess won't be faster than march.... oh. and HD7970 is supposed to have 3GB of Vram! Perfect for Eyefinity! |
