I have a coolermaster 850W silent pro, which I was using with my 5970 before I bought my 6990 and everything was fine.

But since I have been using my 6990,my pc keeps getting random restarts when I am in game.....

Just happens randomly without warning,do you think I need a more capable Psu ?

My pc never restarts when I am browsing the internet, only when I am gaming.

Any ideas ?

The card requires 2 x 8 pin connectors, but this power supply has 6+2 only.......just though I would mention it.

I suppose it's possible that it's not quite enough; what are the 12v rails rated at? If they're all split up, and the card is trying to draw too much from just one, that could cause problems.

Equally, it could be a driver issue. What driver are you running?

Thanks for replying so quick.....

Single +12V rail for up to 80A for high demanding SLI

Catalyst 11.5

More by good luck than judgement, on the speed of the reply. ;)

Then there should be no issues with the PSU.

Were you running 11.5 with the 5970?

...

With the extra info you put in the OP, what do you mean - have you only got one 6+2pin PCI-E lead? Or two? I've run high-end cards off dual-molex-to-PCI-E adaptors before out of desperation when testing and while I've never had a problem, it's not something I'd recommend. ;)

Sorry.......I have about 4 x 6+2pin PCI-E leads.

I must admit, when I was using 11.4 pre release driver with the 6990.......don't think I had problems then, but to be honest I can't remember.

When I was using my 5970,I think I was using 11.2 11.3 ?

Hey,I just read a review of my PSU,read this snippet below :

"Unfortunately, things start falling apart when more is asked of it. Its fan speed profile is far too mundane which allows temperatures to rise to worrying levels and thus causes a rapid degradation of performance as load increases. Remember, this Cooler Master unit is only rated at 40°C so things can and will fall apart when internal temperatures reach 50°C+ like we saw."

"If you are looking for an extremely inexpensive 850W power supply which you won’t be pushing with an ultra high end dual GPU setup, the Silent Pro M could be an option for you. Otherwise, there are better performing units out there which don’t cost all that much more."

Sounds like it might be poor performance at higher temps/load that are causing your issue. :(

I have rolled the catalyst driver back to 11.4 just to see if this makes any difference.....

If it doesn't,then I think I will maybe change the PSU.

Thanks for your input........

mhm, you have 50° and more in your case? Ever tried to open Case, and maybe put another Case fan under/behind the PSU ? to see if it helps ?

Its an idea........First of all I will see what happens with the 11.4 drivers,so far I have
benchmarked 3dMark 11,Unigine & played Crysis 2 and it hasn't crashed yet.

So i'm hoping that the driver was the cause of my problems.....

I think the inside of my case is a fairly cool temperature,my 6990 idles at 39 oC.

If its not the driver, then I will have a better look at what I can do with the PSU.

Please bear in mind that environment in PSU /= environment in rest of case. Especially if you've got a case which positions the PSU in such a way that it is essentially isolated from the rest of it, in airflow terms.

But drivers are a good start. It's a pity they're such a frequent cause of issues; I've had great fun with some of the recent nVidia ones. :(
