it sounds like monitor scaling is enabled, when its on it will strech the lower resolution image to the native resolution of your monitor.
the monitor scaling settings should be in your nvidia settings depending on your card and driver version.
there may also be a setting in your monitor itself also for scaling. usally make sure the settings for scaling in your monitor are disabled and use the nvidia settings to try and adjust what you need.
