Sorry, that's awesome.

Although it needs to be released soon, and be cheaper than Blu-ray if it's going to be usable as a backup medium.

Back in 2006 TDK already caused some amazement when the company presented a prototype disc with six layers each of which had a capacity of 33 GByte. Thus the "old” prototype already had a overall capacity of 200 gigabytes.

Sounds like it'll never see the light of day, just like its predecessor. Even if TDK plans to release this one, Sony's marketing division will see to it that they don't.

I've been sick of these easy-to-damage discs for many years. I want all my media on solid state, damnit! I want to be able to throw my media around again. I want to be able to leave me media in the sun without having to worry too much.

There's already a to-be consumer level few technologies that will surpass Blu-ray, whenever that is.

Basically, we need flash memory to reach pennies/GB ;)

something. MY goodness DVD-R is the only super cheap format still, I was hoping Bluray burners would slowly get here but they are taking forever to become reasonable.

Blu-ray is totally uneconomical in the UK at the minute - even ignoring the price of the drive, which is a one-shot purchase and would pay for itself over time - for the cost of three 50GB Blu-ray discs, I can get a 1TB HDD. 150GB, or 1000GB? No choice, really. 25GB discs are a bit cheaper, but still only mean 250GB for the cost of that 1TB HDD.

DVD-R in comparison is quite cheap, but it'll still take 218 DVDs (total cost about £24) to back up a 1TB HDD. Something I'm really not prepared to sit around and do. ;)
