My roommate and I are in need of a new router. The Linksys router that we had since last year seems to be bricked. So what I ask of you dear WSGFers, is for any wisdom you have on the subject of routers (the good kind) wifi or not. Wireless capability would be nice (for laptop), but is not required. Thanks everybody! |

One suggestion: WRT54GL Comes up as ~$49 at the egg right now. My GL has been up and running for 1.5+years without a single crash. If you go with 3rd party firmware (DD-WRT or Tomato) you can do some crazy cool things with this little box. Haven't tried it yet myself because it has worked so well with the stock features. |

One suggestion: While my GL has been running steady for quite a while now, after using the DIR-655 I really cant recommend the GL :( |

I've been trolling around on the tubes looking at articles and reviews and I've come upon that DIR-655, and also the DIR-825. Only thing i have to ask about the DIR-655 is if it runs hot, and does performance seem to go down when its running hot? Does anybody know about the DIR-825? PC Magazine loved this one. |

I'd recommend the GL as well, and the 655 also seems pretty good. Friend of mine uses a WRT310N which has gigabit and N, also allows for DD-WRT. |

dir-655 has an insane amount of options in its menu stuff and a friend has one, it is pretty blazing fast. Only downside of it is price pretty much, wrt54g_ wins for a G router. |

I had a WRT54GL but it gave me nothign but headaches.. though everyone else that uses them seems to lvoe the damend tigns. So i'm giving another point to a dir-655. Shitloads of features, a good interface, and as of the lateset cpouple firmware updates, you can use the usb port on it for a printer or external hard drive. Ptretty handy. I as a little hesitant of spending about twice as much for it as i did for my WRT54GL, but it's quite worth it. Also has wireless N and gigabit LAN. But the lights on it are REALLY bright. so if you;r ein a farker room, you may want to slap some semi-transparent tape over them. |

I just recently replaced my WRT54GL with a D-Link DIR 655. Setup was easy, and the LAN speeds improved significantly between my notebook and desktop and the NAS. Mainly since the Linksys was limited to 100 Mbit interfaces. My brother, whom uses my NAS as well in the same apartment complex experienced vastly improved download/upload speeds aswell after the change. I'll miss the DDWRT firmware from the WRT54GL, mainly because of how clean the interface was. |

i have an "old school" DGL-4300 (GB Lan, 10/100 WAN port, QoS etc). Its quite old. have seen sustained 700mbps across the switch, probibly hard drive limited, and its been very reliable, were getting 96mbps off the WAN. can recommend the Dlink high end without hesistation (will be upgrading later on when have some money and a need for faster WAN port) |
