This makes me want to purchase the new cards, but then I remember that you need 2 of them for surround gaming. That could be close to $1500 in graphics cards if they are similar in price to the 5970. That gives me a sick feeling.

Nvidia have finally named the first two cards on the Fermi GF100 chip.
GTX 480 and GTX 470.
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/GeForce-GTX-470-480-Fermi,news-32695.html

Seems like they thing there that good that they completely skipped the 300 range, that said they could always release a scaled back version as 300 or use 300 for mobile GPUs but we'll see.

They already use the 300 range for old rebranded cards. They went for the 400 series to avoid confusion.

Just like the 100-series was quietly released as OEM only, IMHO 300-series will probably go that way too.

Hum,

From the chief executive officers view, It seems that Nvidia isn't to concerned about the Game enthusiast.

"Nvidia’s chief executive officer did not provide any concrete timeframes for the transition of the whole lineup to the new Fermiarchitecture , but said that since the owners of mainstream and entry-level graphics cards hardly demand new functionality, it is not crucial for Nvidia to update currently available “fabulous” graphics chips. "

"For the entry-level products, the truth is that the new architectures […] are probably not extremely well appreciated anyhow. People, who buy the new architectures, tend to be early adopters and they tend to be the game enthusiasts, workstation designers or creative artists or – there are very specific reasons why it really enhances their experience. Our current-generation GPUs are fabulous and all the things that mainstream consumers would use their computer for. […] I think the mainstream GPUs are really fabulous and has been enhanced recently with some really great features and so my sense is that they are going to continue to do quite nicely in the marketplace."

Kind of a "who cares that it will come out slow"

Enthusiast don't make us to much money anyway and the mainstream are doing just fine with what we got now. To me that's kind of a stupid attitude to the enthusiast that actually in my opinion make the GPU market what it is. dont we play a bbig part on what is popular and what is not. Aside from the actual performance of the card itself.
