| Post subject: | First day on eyefinity |
Just got my 5970 and set up eyefinity. Watched a couple of the tutorial video's that are out. Still having problems setting up profiles but no big deal. Played crysis at 1680x1050x3 and had most settings very high and shaders and a few settings on high. Was getting 28-35 fps the whole time. Would like to get about 10 more fps but do not want to decrease settings. Would need a quad core for that but my mobo will not take wolfdales or yorkfield chips. I am running a c2d 6850 at 3.5 with 6 gigs ram and win 7 64 bit. The games I have played so far are crysis and rainbow 6 vegas 2. On vegas 2 I use the same hack that is used for the matrox th and it works perfectly. Vegas 2 only uses 1 of the gpus on the 5970 but I still get 45-50 fps with 3xaa in game and 16x af forced in control panel. I am using 3 1680x1050 monitors and the monoprice dp to vga converter. Every 10 min or so I have a 1 sec blackout on it but I use that monitor on the side so it doesn't affect much. I am going to get more games up today on my day off and report back. The biggest problem is getting the dp/vga monitor to match color etc with the 2 dvi monitors. I am using 3 diff monitors. So far the experience is awesome. Using drivers off the ati website. Not the new 9.12 |

Just for your info: Until now Eyefinity doesn't support Dual-GPUs so your 5970 is a waste of money. Second to that your CPU is too slow to fully utilize a 5970. I suggest getting a core i7 and boost it near 4GHz and pair it with a single 5870 with 2GB of VRAM. This would bring you significant performance gains over your current setup. btw: Do you drive a V8 stang? Me too! :rockout |

I suggest getting a core i7 and boost it near 4GHz Core i7 required a significant amount of upgrading of other components which makes it a very expensive upgrade for most people, more so than even a massive card like the 5970 if you want good components. Also a lot of people do not overclock under any circumstances. |

any dual gpu near the 4ghz mark will handle most games for you. you dont NEED an i7, thats bull. get the new drivers, 9.12 is supposed to support CROSSFIRE and eyefinity. that will enable the 2nd GPU when you play games and should get you more FPS in crysis as well. |

From what I have read the i7 920, the only one I would pay for, is not much of a step up from my Q9550. |

The 5970 had crossfire support with the 9.11 drivers on 21 games. |

Ah ok, 9.12 was just released shortly. Thanks. Though consider upgrading. i5 750 and a P55 Mobo with 4Gig of Ram aren't that expensive. You can afford a 5970 so you should afford a i5/i7 basis to match it. Also a lot of people do not overclock under any circumstances. He does. |

From what I have read the i7 920, the only one I would pay for, is not much of a step up from my Q9550. I hear ya, sister. I was going to get a i7 system until i found that the Q9xxx CPUs still barf up performance pretty close to a couple i5/i7 CPUs, and that's why I'm getting a Q9550 in the next week or so. (Hey, what do you use to cool yours? I have a Freezer 7 Pro on my e6750 and it's doing a damned fine job, but I fear it may not be enough for a Q9.) Going from a 8800gts 512mb to the 5870 gave some pretty good FPS bumps, but I know damned well that my dual-core Intel is holding it back... |
