Paddy, when will you be able to find out whether or not r600 will support the high resolutions for triplehead unlike their older series of cards? It would be nice to not have to be tied to the hip to nvidia and their poor drivers any longer.

My understanding is that it is not the ATI hardware that prevents the use of a 3840x1024 resolution, but rather it is the drivers. I beleive many ATI cards are already capable of outputting this resolution, but the drivers don't allow it. Thus, drivers that fixed this wouldn't just allow 380x1024 on the R600, they would allow it on existing GPUs.

Is it maybe worth an online petition or something to get ATI to take some action on this?

You could also do a petition for nvidia to fix their damned drivers.

Doesn't mean they're actually going to do anything about it though.

Been tried 100x already and been ignored 100x by nvidia. They have no real competition anymore. I am dying to cut myself loose from them but unless R600 supports triplehead then I am stuck.

What exactly is wrong with nVidia drivers? They support proper surround gaming resolutions. They support 9 modes of stereo 3D. They support all sorts of features that ATI doesn't seem to care about.

This is not the place to discuss what is wrong with nvidia's drivers. I would suggest googling 'nvidia vista drivers' and reading some of the 10000000 horror stories if you are not already aware of them.

Ah, Vista. Gotcha.

Anyway, back (sort of) on topic. Does anyone think there would be any benefit to lobbying ATI for real surround resolutions? I guess Matrox has already tried...

I think at this point we wait and see if the new card and its drivers will support the rez's we need. I would be very surprised if the new cards didn't support it, but then again....

Their current cards are capable of it ... just they won't allow them to do it ...
So my feeling is why would they suddenly allow it for the new cards ?
