Matrox said the powerdesk tool is Vista compatible. Has anyone actually tried it? It doesnt seem to be compatible on my mashine. It crashes right at startup and Vista wont even allow me to uninstall it. I've tried it on Vista Ultimate x64 Edition.

If there isn't a specific reason you have for using the PowerDesk software, I would say to just uninstall it if you can, or revert back to a restore point.

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 without the PowerDesk software installed and the TH2G works great.

Oh yeah TH2G is just hardware and doesn’t need any software to run. I know that ... it runs fine without it but I do some audio/video production and I like to snap my programs to each screen which cannot be done without running the powerdesk.

Anyways I was just trying out the vista and posted my findings here for anyone who is planning to use it. I've already went back to XP x64. Vista is great looking piece of software but still so buggy ... there is virtually f@#$ all that runs on it.

P.S. how in the world are you running 2 Athlon FX-70 CPUs???????????

I've been using PowerDesk in Vista for about a month now, I was only using it to limit maximize to a singe screen, but I just turned on edge snapping and it seems to work (I was never able to get that to work in XP actually).
I didn't do anything special when I installed it. I'm using version 11.8.500.6 if that is any help.

Quadfather baby! :)

Technically, I guess, AMD are calling it a Quad-FX system.

I was due for an upgrade after Christmas so I built my system using their 4 core platform. I love it! Actually I've found Vista to utilize it better than XP did.

BTW, thanks Phobos for the info. I'll have to check into it soon and see if PowerDesk works on my system as well as yours.

cheers

Oh sweet ... i had no idea FX series were capoble of running in multiples. I thought Opterons were the only ones. You've got some serios prossesing power there.

I've never had the pleasure of running an Opteron system. I upgraded from a single AMD 64 3200+ processor. So this is quite an upgrade for me.

I wish the support for Vista was wider, but then I had the same trouble running XP x64 where some software developers just refused to put any support towards it.

It will come in time, no doubt. Just can't wait until Crysis and other DX10 games come out so I can really witness the beauty of the system. :)

cheers

It was for me as well ... i went to Dual Opteron from Athlon XP about 1 year ago. Boy time flies by.........

I guess for now we'll have to settle for XP x64 untill all the Vista fixes are done. There is really no point running this kind of power on a 32bit platform.

Anyways ... wow i wont and looked up your mobo and everyhting ... really nice piece of gear you got there. This is some kind of spinoff from the new Opteron Socket F but uses unbuffered memory. FX series was always based ont he Opteron technology ... i guess they disited to leave some of the server capobilities in the CPU. :)

Yes, it is based on the Opteron technology. Socket 1207. I call it the Poor Man's Opteron system. :)

My initial plan was to dual boot XP and Vista after building the system, but then since most of the software I run works fine with Vista (there's always exceptions) I decided to just go full out with Vista. I haven't touched XP since January and I really don't miss it.

I've had to "rework" Vista a bit to get it running like I want (like disabling the over-protective security) but now that's it running I have to say it's got some great improvements in it's memory management and network communications. Definitely a plus over XP.

There will always be the growing pains during the first year or so. But then I wouldn't be an early-adopter if I wasn't expecting that.

I love screwing around with new stuff. :)

cheers
