I'm not against having an FOV fix for the demo. But I wont mind if we have to wait for the full game before we get one.

The demo is not even a full 'interval' and takes maybe 5 minutes to complete... I don't see Racer_S or anybody bothering fixing it while the full game and probably every patch version will need their own hack :?

A little update... FEAR2 in 5040x1050 (the bit on the left is my secondary monitor which helped make this possible)

Just sorting out why the menus are messed and I should have a release!

Sorry for the wait, just a little bit longer now :)

EDIT: seems the pixels get stretched to fit? you guys can let me know when theres a release.

Something definitely doesn't look right in that shot. Can you upload a shot in PNG so there's no JPEG artifacting? I can't tell whether things are getting stretch or whether the blocking is a result of it being JPEG.

It def looks like it's been rendered in a much smaller resolution and then just stretched. Looks too blocky and blurry. However the AR looks correct. Odd !

Yes the site is currently infected. It will try and download and run "svacm.exe" from "www[dot]mp3-player-board[dot]de" in "c:windowstemp". It seems all areas of the site are infected with this, so don't try any links there at all. If you've visited check for this process/file and run some kind of anti-malware !

Hopefully will hear from Racer_S when he gets it cleared up.

Here is a version of the 'broken' fix..

http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/3/23/1831205/FEAR2FOV.rar

Im still trying to figure out the pixelation issue :(

My site was hacked again, so this is on a remote server. I'm in the process of upgrading my server at the moment.

I'm afraid that this hack doesn't work with the Steam version of Fear 2, am I wrong?

racer_s please explain how to get it working?

the pixelation is not something that's wrong, the game has a noise filter over it.

what does left, top, right, bottom mean in the hack?

the default has 0, 0 , 640, 480 ??? what do they mean?

also it says enable is f5 but in the readme it says * is to enable i tried both and both don't work :(

thanks

anyone else tried?

0, 0 , 640, 480

replace 640 with the width of your screen
replace 480 with the height of your screen
??????????

Even if you buy the game in a retail store, you still have to activate it on Steam, so I don't think it matters where you bought it. :)

it should be working with the retail version, i was using a nocd... I might need someone to dump their memory and send me the file and I can fix that.

I just want to know if its possible to turn off that noise filter, better yet if its possible to edit the Arch01 files, i believe the aspect ratio is in a config file somewhere.

if you want to take a look at the game files you can use the Arch00 Explorer for the first F.E.A.R.

just google arch00 extractor and grab the "FEAR SP Demo arch00 Extractor" from filefront.

go to file->open and type *.* [enter] to be able to pick the arch01 files

There is a "clarity mod" out there that does just that.

Well going from the quote that Mobster has from DF, I am in the majority! The hack has Left 0 Top 0 Right 640 Bottom 480 so I replace the Right and Bottom values with 5040 and 1050? Makes no sense to me, but fair enough. OK but it then says F5 enable F6 disable in the hack but * enable in the readme.
Neither seems to do anything for my Demo version...

Yeah, if we knew which No-CD to get it would help. Unless it didn't matter. But I wouldn't mind knowing, ya know?

My FEAR2.exe is version 1.0.2240.0.

The fix is working for me here... just tried it.. I dont have another machine to test it on at the moment.

Did anyone manage to get it working?

I have some time today to poke around a bit.

F5 enables the fix, dont press it until you are in game (weapon in hand)

for triplewide my settings are left 0 top 0 right 5040 bottom 1050

here is a brighter screenshot

its looking really crappy :(

I tried installing the FEAR1 sdk to try and open the Arch01 files but it needs FEAR1 installed which I dont have.. maybe somebody with FEAR1 can look into this?

It's... weird.

If you look, it's scaling the image vertically, but not horizontally.

You can see this by looking at the bottom/top sides of the bench or LCD. If you look at the sides, though, you can see heavy stair-stepping (image being scaled vertically).

This makes it seem like it's being rendered internally at a lower vertical resolution and then scaled to fit the screen.

Rumor has it FEAR 1 file tools like Arche Noah or MultiEx would work better than the SDK anyway... Did you try these ?

I can't get the full version working.

These are from the demo fix Racer sent to me ...

Motion blur and HDR off ...

Motion blur and HDR on ...

Motion blur and HDR off ...

Motion blur and HDR off ...

Motion blur and HDR on ...

Also, you can see the crosshair underneath the seven on the calendar. : P
The whole HUD is on the left in Racer's shot ... for me using the fix for the demo I start the game and then atl-tab to start the fix whilst on the main menu puts it on the centre screen.

a little update...

I've found some config settings..

C:Documents and Settings[user]My DocumentsWBGamesFEAR2settings.cfg

You can add these lines:

run the game windowed:
"Windowed" "1.000000"

change the aspect ratio, but letterboxing still there:
"FovAspectRatioScale" "1.000000"

changes the FOV:
"FovY" "90.00000"

does nothing?
"UseWideScreen" "1.000000"

i was trying these, have no effect?
"LetterBoxPercent" "2.000000"
"LetterBoxDisabled" "1.000000"
"LetterBox" "0.000000"

i'm looking through the strings in gameclient.dll to find a possible setting to get rid of the letterboxing

Well those pictures that Paddy posted do show significant improvement over the regular screens. I've still got hope for this one.

Exactly ... who knows ... not even a mention of 16:10.

I still think we can get it working today if racer_s uploads his nocd.exe somewhere :)

the patch would definitely help with getting triplewide working, seeing as it moves the letterboxes if i read that correctly.

here is my exe:
[removed link]
doubt that is the problem though

edit: paddy could you upload the demo fix somewhere? I think I lost it  also it might work for others. Those screens look nice, I turned off motion blur and HDR and it was still blurry, maybe it depends on the scene.

Here is the fix for the demo ... FEAR2-DEMO-FOV.rar
Start the game ... on the main menu atl-tab out ... start the fix ...
Set it as follows ...

left 0
top 0
right 5040 (your horizontal rez)
bottom 1050 (your vertical rez)

Go back to the game and start the demo.

Turn off Motion blur and HDR to remove the pixelization ... it does come back at times when certain effects happen ... like slo-mo.

I can't get the full version to work with Racer's .exe either ... the game junks out to desktop.

Thanks all, for expediting my decision NOT to buy this game!

I mean that sincerely. When makers of console games do sh*tty ports and don't look after us PC gamers, I boycott the game - my own little protest

Yay ...
It appears to be fixed ... :surroundsmiley

After the update via Steam ...
In the graphics settings ... Options|Performance|Advanced Settings menu ... at the bottom ... turn OFF Widescreen and all seems good in TH ...

TripleHead ...

16:10 ...

5:4 ...

Unfortunate wording means that you have to turn OFF widescreen in order to get what I would call true widescreen ...
Now it might actually deserve that gold certification !

Great news. When are they gonna learn ?  If the next patch could remove forced Steam activation, I'll gladly buy the game right away despite all I disliked in the demo...
Big kudos to Racer_S for trying ! Now leave him alone, he's gotta work on Shaun White Snowboarding :hide

Get lost. Shaun White Snowboarding is not only "anamorphic, just like Assassins Creed" - it's based on the very same engine. And doesn't require a Steam account for a change. :P SWS FTW !

Trolling is irrelevant. And unnecessary, as I have little hope that my request will ever be fulfilled anyway... You're only hurting my feelings. And Shaun's. All this because of our haircut. Cruel world.

No doubt but... are you sure you posted this in the right place ??
Dirt 1 and Grid never needed Racer_S's expertise, there's no reason to fear that Dirt 2 will.
Fuel will be so much better than Dirt 2 anyway. :)

Probably irrelevant 'cos I reckon that you won't see Fuel to some time in 2010 or 11... Fuel is the new Duke! ;)

EDIT: ignore the above comment, I was thinking about RAGE... Rage is the new Duke!

I agree, reviewers are too cynical. It is a great game, bullet time/slo-mo is still cool. It is a bit easy, but I have just put it onto hard so that is OK.

And it does still scare me once in a while!

Unbelievable! Though it's kind of a shame they didn't just have it in there from the get go.

Will have to pick this one up soon.

An updated demo, though not likely to appear would be appropriate. After all, people complained about the "black bars" before the full game was released, and the current demo is no longer a reliable sample of the game, especially for angry TripleHeaders.

thanks for the hard work.

is there a patch for the full version of the game yet? not just the demo.

I don't want to get the game until I know it will work in triplehead

Can anyone explain me why does the menu freeze after a couple of seconds when I apply 5760x1200? there are sounds when I press buttons but there are no changes on the screen. updated with last patches. SoftTH 1.09. I've noticed that when I quit the game with saved 5760x1200 resolution, I am able to start it up with 5760x1200, able to see the main menu, switch between menu items, but when I press Enter on one of them and try to switch menu, it freezes immediately and nothing can turn it back. I'm crying

I have the same Problem with a cracked version of the Game (but with latest Patch 1.05) and SoftTH 1.09.
I have found a manual in the SoftTH Forum: http://www.kegetys.net/forum
But it does not work for me. Looks like i need to buy it originally... :-/

I just wanted to post if you played this game and gave up before "Interval 5", get back in there and play some more. For me the first few intervals were kinda dull and routine, but each "Interval" got a little better so I kept returning for more...then "Interval 5" the game gets back to what FEAR does best, creepy images in the distance, or skittering crawlies at the peripheral edge of your vision, and the occaisonal Alma wrestle...

The School is really well done, and after that it keeps up the quality, you start to encounter some very fast enemies that require the slomo to take them down...keep playing, if you liked the first FEAR, it returns to form...playing 5040x1050 (plus bezel) with no problems or lockups.

What's the trick to getting FEAR 2 to run on Nvidia Surround? It only displays on the center screen for me even though all 3 monitors are active and the resolution is set to 5760 x 1080 :?

Well I first got the game working pretty well (though not perfect) using SoftTH using the below directions, probably not needed with Surround but worth a try...once I switched to Surround, the game worked first try and worked better (no texture issues)...perhaps try 5040x1050 first? Then increase the rez?

1) Patch/Update game to 1.02 or greater (newer patches support triplewide)

2) Launch game single screen one time, set up your key remaps as needed

3) Edit this file at %USERPROFILE%My DocumentsWBGamesFEAR2

settings.cfg
========
"UseWideScreen" "0.000000"
"RestartRenderBetweenMaps" "0.000000"
"VSyncOnFlip" "1.000000"
"ScreenHeight" "1050.000000"
"BitDepth" "32.000000"
"DeviceName" ".DISPLAY1"
"ScreenWidth" "5040.000000"
"HardwareCursor" "1.000000"
"Gamma" "1.000000"

Same here at 5040x1050 (steam version), oh why ... :doh

Edit: Fixed, in the game menu, go to performance and advanced, scroll down to the bottom and switch "Widescreen" to off.

Crap. I just now saw this, lol. 3 screens is working but I get double vision when I switch it into 3D mode. This game would be awesome in 3D Surround! I just can't win :(
