Famous last words, spoken far too soon, it seems...
When I went to start my PC back up after dinner, I got the 'out of range' thing again. My desktop was set to 5040x1050.
So I had to go to Safe Mode and uninstall the gpu drivers to get back into windows at all. When I got there, Win7 automatically installed it's drivers, which were 186 something. Tried installing 182.50, and got a message that I had no compatible hardware... Getting frustrated at this point. Uninstall all powerdesk, gpu and all I can find.
Reinstall nvidia drivers, for some reason this works now. The 186 drivers allow 3xxx x 768 res, so at least my desktop is somewhat readable. Install Powerdesk beta, and reboot as per instructions. Got stuff back up, but I'm reluctant to use 5040 res now, incase it fails again. Try to set 4396, but it's not there. Went to powerdesk, and no go, it's as if I don't have the 192.5 drivers installed, but all the files match. I reboot, and install the 182.50 drivers again. No errors, reboot, and run the powerdesk wizard again, setting 4396 res. Works fine, all is good.
I have 5040 available and working now, both in desktop and games.
But for how long? I'm reluctant to set 5040 res in desktop now, in case it fails again. In games it's fine, if it fails I can quit the game and get back and change things. If the desktop fails it's safemode and the uninstall dance all over again..
Anything I did or didn't do?
What are the odds it was just a glitch and won't happen again?
I hate not being able to trust my computer to boot right every time I press the button, so for now I'm going with 4396 res and leaving it alone.
