OK, if you uninstall GXM, it no longer kills your custom res.
The minute you reinstall GXM (even with the 5040 res set up), it kills it on the next reboot.
I found this in the GXM .inf:

These are presumably registry entries, but when I search for these entries using regedit, they don't seem to have been added to the registry.
Maybe Vista is preventing this during the install? Because it looks to me as if those entries are needed to provide the new resolutions supported by the updated BIOS.
Sorry for all the posts...but I figure if I document this, then we won't have to reinvent the wheel.
