There is now question as to whether all, or only some, of the latest AMD graphics cards will support mixed rotation with Eyefinity.

R9 285 (GCN 1.2) is tested working. I expected all newer AMD cards to support PLP. I had this impression because I remember Skip was told by AMD rep that their future cards would include this same PLP modification.

But suiken said he didn't think it so likely. "Unless that hardware has been added to the cards, I don't see any of the rebrands with GCN 1.1 or less having PLP support, although I don't know for sure." Said here: http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=29065

His statement worried me. Seemed likely correct that GCN version matters for PLP. But we don't know for sure, AMD has said nothing clear.

Research & Proof (ongoing):
1. Scary blurb that ties GCN to PLP. It seems to confirm exactly what suiken said.
"The AMD Radeon™ R9 285 graphics card is loaded with the latest from Graphics Core Next (GCN) Architecture, including mixed screen resolution and orientation for AMD Eyefinity..."
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/LP/amd-tonga.php

2. If GCN version is required for PLP (GCN 1.2+):
- these cards will allow PLP: Fury, Fury X, Fury X2, R9 Nano (all GCN 1.2). R9 380 (GCN 1.2 too, but using different chipset codename).
- these cards may not allow PLP: R9 390, R9 390X, R7 360 (all GCN 1.1). R7 370 (GCN 1.0).
- maybe missed odd junk, it's all here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Radeon_Rx_300_series
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_Radeon_Rx_200_series

3. Club3d has been requested to test the R9 390 for mixed rotation support. The card is among the most likely to fail PLP (& a good card, damn).
Club3d was the first online entity to prove that R9 285 had PLP support. There is a good chance they will have interest in this new request.

Will update when news. If you have ideas/news on this issue, share it...

i think the 390 does have some new hardware on the chip to support Downsampling and such, maybe thats enough to get PLP running.
If it is really depending on GCN 1.1 or 1.2 then it will not work.
I really hope the whole new generation can do PLP.

Great news, Club3d will be testing for Eyefinity PLP support sometime this week, so results shortly. The request was specifically for R9 390 (but who knows, they may end up testing something else). Hopefully we can extrapolate for remaining cards.

Haldi thanks for questioning my certainty of blanket PLP support. I was wrong to trust, so early in the game. Also the new AMD lineup is a patchwork quilt, & should not be trusted blind.

Club3d has tested & failed PLP on R9 390X. But they still have some hope.

"We checked with the R9 390X and the 15.20 beta driver and PLP is not supported. The 370, 380 and 390 use the same driver.
Lets wait until the final WHQL driver is released and we will see what happens"
- - -

So test failed & tester felt nothing concrete was proven, as a short-term driver issue could be the cause (like what happened with R9 285).

A second test would have proven more, using R9 380 (GCN 1.2, on 15.2 beta driver).
- If it failed PLP, likely beta driver is the problem.
- If successful PLP, then GCN 1.2+ is a mandatory requirement & driver is not the problem.

I will not perform this R9 380 test (interest is elsewhere ATM). And Club3d doesn't sound likely to test it either, preferring to wait for proper drivers. Maybe some other curious PLP enthusiast is willing to test it. Otherwise we are likely to wait months before knowing, when proper drivers release. By that time there will hopefully be enough "PLP" cards tested overall to have concrete understanding of AMD card requirements for PLP.

It still seems likely to me that R9 Fury series would support Eyefinity PLP, right now. But it may not, due to the potential of similar short-term driver issue.

Questions:
1. Is it likely that new driver will add in the missing PLP support? (like R9 285 did)
2. Likely this driver will release December? (a year after last Omega update)
3. Or is it more likely it is the failure of GCN 1.1? (which R9 390X uses)

Club3d: "We had the same situation with the 285 card which was announced with the support and was later implemented. We are checking with AMD with this matter and see what is the feedback."

The drivers that fixed R9 285 took about 3 months (?? can't remember)

It's frustrating that AMD are not forthcoming about Eyefinity PLP support in the 300 series. I guess it's rather niche and therefore doesn't come up on the marketing department's radar.

I have cash ready to go for a supporting card for my 20-30-20 setup but don't feel a 285 is quite up to the task. The 390X would fit nicely into my budget but it's looking increasingly likely that this won't do PLP. I personally think there's a very slim hope that new drivers will enable the feature for the 390 since the part of the driver which implements PLP must be there for the 285 and possibly for the 380.

There's better hope for the Fury range with some indication here. So it looks like I'll be waiting some more to see how the Fury and Nano are priced.

Great find Veube. themeatcleaver says "I did get confirmation from AMD on facebook that the Fury will indeed support the mixed rotation eyefinity"

Notes:
Fury has no proof yet of tested working PLP.
There is a chance it needs a driver update to work, not stated.
It seems likely that chipset codename (e.g. Tonga) is irrelevant for PLP support.

I am also going to test if Fury supports PLP when I get my card. Have 20-30-20 Classic PLP setup.

Heck, its the only reason why I bought the lousy card in the first place.

Hey guys, thanks for all the hard work and research.

I've been investigating this situation too and managed to ask some guys over at reddit to test their new cards.

/u/330066 managed to test his new Fury X in PLP and various other configurations, stretched with rotated. See the thread here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/3b ... irm_if_it/

TL:DR, PLP works on the Fury X.

Awesome... and ugly :).
Image
(from link above, test by reddit user "330066")

-------------- Eyefinity PLP Graphics Cards List----------------
TESTED, Eyefinity PLP Works:
- R9 285 (GCN1.2, proven by Club3D)
- R9 380 (GCN 1.2, proven by illogique on wsgf. But maybe bit buggier? Tester respond please)
- R9 380X (GCN 1.2, proven by MÆGGES on wsgf. But maybe bit buggier? Tester respond please)
- R9 Fury (GCN 1.2, proven by Adam G in newegg comment)
- R9 Fury X (GCN 1.2, proven by "330066" on reddit)
- R9 Nano (GCN 1.2, proven by KleitusIV on wsgf)

UNTESTED, but they will allow Eyefinity PLP the same (all GCN 1.2):
- R9 285X
- R9 Fury X2
- Radeon Pro Duo (new 2016 Q2 monster)

TESTED, FAILED
- R9 390X (GCN 1.1, proven by Club3D, using a now-older driver (but it was newer than Omega garbage-version)

UNTESTED, WILL FAIL, very likely never allowing Eyefinity PLP:
R9 390, R7 360 (all GCN 1.1). R7 370 (GCN 1.0).
