Welcome to the club!
I can't say much about the preferred connection method when using active displayport adapters, as I'm running 1 native displayport with two native DVI.
As for Crossfire, it's a mixed bag. Some games will show a fair improvement whereas others will have bugs or even decreased performance in Crossfire. It really depends on your budget and how much the extra framerate or higher quality visuals matter to you. I tried removing my second card to decrease temperature but found that I missed the extra performance too much and ended up putting it back in. Running two cards does significantly increase the temperature on my first card though, because it gets so much less airflow. If you're going Crossfire, make sure you've got good airflow in general.
If you're getting lower than acceptable framerates, the first thing to do is completely disable antialiasing. It kills performance in most games at triple-wide resolutions. After that, if I'm still having poor performance, I'll drop my resolution from 5760x1080 down to 4800x900. The difference in resolution is noticeable and bugs me right after changing it, but after 30 minutes or so I don't even notice that it's running at a lower resolution and the increased framerate more than makes up for it.
