Post subject:  Active / Not Active DP - VGA Cable - Stopping from Extending screen to 3x 1 Landscape? HD 6770 + 4 19" Monitors - All are VGA

Ok so i bought a Radeon HD 6770 with 2 x DVI and 1 X Display Port on it, i upgraded for the soul fact that my development is now in XNA 4.0 and i had to get a new card.

So while i was at the store i figured for an extra 40 bux peripheral vision for gaming would b nice, so i bought the card.

i have 2 x SyncMaster Samsung 319n and 1 x SyncMaster Samsung 320n and then some hp monitor that is VGA, not DVI, but LCD of course, same size all 19".

All are VGA, non have a dvi connection, which is fine cuz ushally i develop,

At this point i am not worried about 1080 p or 3d rendering, i just want eyefinity to work, and group monitors 1 2 3 into a group of 1 as 3x1 Lanscape (the trhee monitors im using are left to right all the samsungs with the 320 on the right) shouldnt matteter at all, there danm near identical,

Now, my monitors are all running from the card, DVI - VGA adapters, to the monitors VGA port, so naturally when i bought the Display Port to DVI, it didnt fit due to the 4 pins for analog, (my bad)

so i go back

cuz i know now i have to have a VGA connection out of my display port.

i know the difference between passive and active, alot of research online has lead me to belive it didnt matter because VGA is analog, and wouldnt need an active cable,

now in the store some are active and some are not.

so i buy a basic StarTech one Model : DP2VGA2 u can look it up

dosnt say if its active or not, so i give it a try,

i can get all 3 monitors to work on my new GFX card, but they are all in duplicate or clone mode. Once in that mode if i right click on ANY screen (in Catylist), i do not have the option to EXTEND, my computer store has the same ATI driers and setup on there display modle, and the option is there. Diffrtence with there display model's - there all DVI and the one thats on the display port is using an active DP to DVI cable.

So ive returned my DP to VGA cable, and tried to get a TRUE ACTIVE one that has the eye finity mark on it. cant find one in town, had to order on ebay and thats where i am now....

my question is, am i right? lol im 200 + bux in, so i want it to work. and i dnt wana replace my monitors, i like 4:3 and 19 inchs is big enough for me .

So will a TRUE DP to VGA ACTIVE adapter, allow the catylist drivers to detect the display and extend to it? or am i still in the wrong place, and i HAVE to upgrade my monitors?

This should b working :

Thanks guys

Post subject:  somebody correct me if I'm

somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that all DP > VGA dongles are active, as DP is a digital source, you can't turn that into a VGA (analogue) signal without some sort of processing. Know what I mean, you cannot just send the digital data thru to a VAG connection, which is the definition of a passive adapter.

I have seen the inside of a Apply DP>VGA adapter and there is a chip inside it. so something is doing something, making it not passive.

Post subject:  Indeed all DP > VGA adaptors

Indeed all DP > VGA adaptors are genrally active adaptors.
For example I use this adaptor... http://www.scan.co.uk/products/scan-hdminidp-vga-mini-display-port-11a-to-vga-adaptor-cable-%28apple-compatiable%29

Post subject:  ok, so lets asume the crappy

ok, so lets asume the crappy star tech one i bought was not active,

is there any other reason in my setup that u guys think would be stopping it?

i do run a second video card that is not ATI, i have a nvidia 8800 GT in a 8X pci-e slot, just for extra monitors, this wouldnt cause ne thing would it?

regardless now i have to wait a week for ebay to set this up....

now lets also assume the DP2VGA2 Startech adapter i previously purchesed, was active.... and i took it back for nothing.... why wouldnt it let me extend.... sounds like a silly question, but id like to cover my base's

Thanks guys great info so far,
