Post subject:  First Radeon 6990 Sighting

Engadget posted the first sighting of the Radeon 6990. It has 4x Mini-DP and 1xDL-DVI. This would seem to support 5x1 on the Dual-GPU Radoen 6990. It also requires 8-pin + 6-pin auxillary power. This is the same power requirements as the Dual-GPU 5970 and the recent NVIDIA GTX580.

While I'm glad to see the 5x1 support, I am disappointed at the cable configuration. I already spent money on Mini-DP > DP cables for Radeon 5870 E6, so that I could run everything off of DP connections. I already have my Mac Pro running on the DVI ports on the monitors. Considering there is no option to convert DVI > DP, I'll have to swap cables around and be inconsistent in my connections between my PC and Mac.

I get that 5xMini-DP + 1xDVI wouldn't all fit on one half of the card. And, I get how having a DVI connection makes it easy for single monitor users - but adapters dirt cheap now. Nothing deal-breaking, but it would have been nice for AMD to be consistent in their cabling from one generation to the next.

4x DP 1.2 :D

I am wondering how many monitors can be supported with daisychain screens or with mst hubs

Would be more excited if Tri-Fire actually worked in anything on these cards. (See here: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1036757308&postcount=291)

Don't understand the point of these dual GPUs cards when everyone already has multiple PCI-E slots on their board unless they intend on making at least 3-way CF worth the trouble.

This is a possible upgrade for myself.

I just saw the same sighting on another tech site. I've been waiting for a good reason to upgrade from my 5870 E6's, looks like 2 of these bad boys could be fun

I think it's heavier than my laptop... and my laptop is no pushover (Asus G50xt).

I'm wondering about cost. If it's close to what my E6 card cost when I bought it, I may snag it up. (About $500)

Little disappointed at the configuration but suppose it's understandable. They could have gone with 6 mini DP though and just thrown in an adaptor as usual for DL DVI.

I assume the four dp are 1.2 standard? Trouble is, unless they also bring out a dp hub then this is a step back from the E6 until those hubs are available.
