I have the 6970 in 3x1 in portrait mode using 3 u2311s... just upgraded to the 11.7 catalyst drivers. I still have the vertical tearing, but now it moves super slowly across the screen. Before it would move relatively fast across (in seconds), but now it takes at least a few minutes. I have 2 DPs connected and 1 DVI... I set one of the DPs as my primary so I only get the tearing on my DVI. Maybe they'll get it fixed in 11.8....

My XFX 6970s (reference) having tearing on the desktop and it's fairly annoying. Until very recently I had ASUS DirectCU II 6970s and was using 3xDP, which eliminated the tearing altogether.

Right now I'm waiting on new cards to arrive and I'm using my XFX 6970 again while I wait...the tearing is back, even with my main monitor on DVI and side monitors on DP. I'd definitely go all DP if you have the option.

All this debate about v-sync on or off, different graphic settings, using different adapters and connections isn't necessarily the real problem.

I have a Sapphire 6990 and an entirely brand new system and a fresh install of Windows 7 32-bit. I just bought 3 brand new 27" led displays with displayports. I have all 3 displays in portrait mode and I'm running mini-dp to DP cables to each one. Regardless, I still get some tearing in certain games, yet some games are fine. One game in particular that suffers from tearing is Crysis. No matter what the driver settings are, or in-game settings the tearing still exists. But I can switch to Portal 2 and there's no tearing.

I did make one discovery, and that is if I played Crysis in windowed mode there was absolutely no tearing. Why, I don't know. Also to note, I don't get any tearing on my desktop when I move windows around either so maybe it's tied in with that somehow.

Games tested with 11.8 Catalyst:
Far Cry 2 - no tearing vsync off.
Portal 2 - no tearing vsync off.
Bad Company 2 - very little tearing with vsync on. Off it's very apparent
Deus X Revolutions - no tearing with vsync off.
Cyrsis - tearing no matter what the settings are.
Dirt 2 - no tearing with vysnc off.

It looks to me it depends on what game your playing whether you get tearing or not. I think the main culprit here is a driver issue that AMD is simply not addressing and they really need to. People throw down big $$$ for multi-monitor gaming and when it works half-assed it's very disappointing and unacceptable. AMD and Nvidia flauntingly advertise multi-monitor gaming, yet the technology is still very flawed.
