Now that is just overkill.

To enthusiasts, there is no such thing as "overkill". :wink:

what I mean is that the hardware upgrade is pretty damn impressive
xeon => core i9
5 Ghz => 6 Ghz
GTX285 => HD5870

I'm just a little dumbstruck that for so many important upgrades, the score only takes 22% ...

and I wonder what's not shown in this news that means this difference :
for example :
-is the GTX285 more overclocked (percentage wise) than the HD5870 ?
-is the xeon architecture more efficient clock for clock ?

I'll say it another way around, I expected more from the HD5870 (more so with a core i9) ..

I won't make excuses, but I'd imagine that the drivers aren't quite perfect yet. And if ATi do the same as they did for the 3000 and 4000 series, they don't really bother about 3D Mark as much as they used to. They seem to have grasped that people play games, not benchmarks. ;)

I would also suspect that Vantage doesn't scale well above quad core CPUs... :)

And hey, there are more than enough people out there (enthusiasts) who will spend hundreds of dollars more for an extra 5-10% performance.
