*Edid: Even on a 1080p screen, click original size in Youtube player video options - as Youtube will give you a much better bit rate with 4k than with 1080p or 720p. That way 4k looks stunning compared to normal videos, even on a normal HD screen. So will 4k sbs look great on stande 3d display devices*

Hello,

I was not logged in here for quite some time - but I am back with some entertainment stuff. A friend of mine and me, we both have the opportunity to use professional video equipment like a 4k Sony projectors and broadcast capture devices. With our archive of most PC games from the past 20 years, it did not take long until we started to "4k" our collection. Capturing 4k does not take long, nor is it most of the time complicated to get games running in 4k - but the upload takes time. So we will 24/7 uploading tons of "4k" PC games in the next months! As it will take time get get everything uploaded. please post a wish list of preferred games.
We certainly will focus very soon on the creation of 3D 4k material. Because of the hardware (cable/video standart/bandwidth) 4k in now limited to 30hz (60hz with ATI hack), but will also be limited to regular 60hz for a long future (HDMI 1.5). So we will concentrate on 4k side by side projects.

Like with Crisis Warhead, we will produce 4k videos with and without texture and other graphic mods. We do not use games that show violence, . If a game shows content we do not like, but we want it in 4k, we will choose parts from the game that are ok with us.

We also take screen shots from games running in 4k. And if a game shows more field of view in 4k resolutions, we also do screen shots in 720p and 1080p. As I do not know what file sizes and numbers are allowed in this forum, I will wai for clarification before uploading them.

I think the upload limit was 10mb or 30mb. enough for large jpegs.

so you use a Broadcast capture device? you put that thing between computer and Projector? does that have included storage or reencode the video live?

it would be awesome if you could upload the 4k Screenshots of the menue and ingame directly into the Detailed Report of each game in the MasterGameList.

There are stand alone capture devices, but many broadcast solutions are base on PCIX cards. But even this cards go for insane prices when able to do 4k. And yes, the capture PC/devices go between source and display. Then, the capture device can handle storage adn depending on the input also compression live.

I will look through the master game list tomorrow, and start to add our screen shots. So far we did ingame screens, and only some showing the graphic stettings at 4xxxX2xxx. But we can do more menu shots from now on and from past projects.

Question: I have just looked to the master game list and found under edit the category for 4k screen shots. Can I add there also the 720p and 1080p comparison screen shots, that show the same scene like a 4k shot we did?
We only do lower resolution shots in games where the fov increases with the resolution. If not, we only do 4k shots so far.

The Category "4k UHD Screenshots" is for 4k Screenshot only, if you make 1920x1080p screenshots you can add them under 16:9 in:
  • Gameplay Screenshots
  • In-Game (Rendered) Cut-Scenes
  • FMV Cut-Scenes
  • Menu Screenshots
Depending on what kind of Screenshot.
If you Upload a 1920x1080 or 1280x720 doesn't (shouldn't) really matter, as it is both 16:9, though 1920x1080 is more used and thus prefered.

If there are already 4(or 3) Screenshots of 4:3, 16:10, 16:9 and Eyefinity/Surround and you don't want to replace them because they all show the same scene, there is the "Additional Screenshots" where you could upload other screenshots that are not 4k and show significant changes.

Ok, added the first series of pictures (from the games mentioned in the first post). Now I know what categories there are and will take future shots following this. I will come back and add links to videos that have finished uploading by now. But I am busy....

Is there a way (or planned) to add video links to the "Master List"?

Next games to be done: Mirrors Edge, Dreamfall, Super Street Fighter 4, Avatar the Game,....

We'd like to keep consistent comparisons between the 4:3, 16:10, 16:9, 21:9 and multi-mon. If possible, please don't replace the 16:9 screenshot, unless you can do a full set of replacements.

You can always use the "additional screenshots" to put up a comparison set of 1080p and 4k. Thanks for your help with this. I'm working to get some 4k action going on my end, but it's slow going... (and expensive)

Hello,

and sure, I would never replace the screen shot of someone else. I am focusing on 4k anyway. And if a gme shows more fov with higher res., you guys will most likely have shots in lower resolutions in this great list.

Side note: Today we had a capture session, and we found some modern games that were limited to max. 3600x2025 or 3520x1920. Looks fantastic on a 4k screen, but ist not 4k by definition. So what to consider them? 90% 4k :-)
I could add that as a side note in the 4k section and post the limit that we reach by painful attempts.

Videos load up fast than I am linking them, I know, but I will return tomorrow and link them to the first post.

If we go by the definition on wikipedia then a 4K video format is any video with a horizontal resolution in the order of 4,000 (or around 4,000). The lowest official resolution it lists as 4K is "Academy 4K (storage format)", which is 3656 × 2664. So my vote is to use that as the minimum for a 4K resolution. It's worth noting that even thought that resolution has the lowest width of the official 4K resolutions, it has the second highest pixel count. It's also worth noting that the list of monitors and TVs does not list any with a resolution below 3840×2160.

Also I resent the stab at my videos not being real 4K videos, by definition that are in fact a true 4K format, however that said I intentional include the mathematical symbol for "about", ie ~, before the 4K notional to indicate it's not a standard 4K format :P

Hello,

I do not know your videos, but I have seen videos with the math symbol. But our "real" does not aim at the 4k thing, but only to the "single display". As I was doing 4k with 4 1080p projectors long time ago. So just a clarifacation in the tilte were the videos come from....

Well, probbaly some can remeber 720p being called HD Ready and the progressive fromats of Pal and NTSC also had some kind of HD name in very very early times. I am sure this will not be done with 4k, as no intermediate 4k steps will hit the market. Also from dozens of titles we did so far, only a few strategy games had this problem of not going up to full 4k 16x9.

But 3500 or 3600 horizontally is extremly close to consumer 4k at 3840. And even not being by definition 4k, I guess many people will enjoy playing this resolution on their 4k screens in the future. So an entry in the 4k list seems profitabel to me, certainly with adding the limitation. Also, It can save pain to the ones that will not have to try for themselves to find the engine limit.
I do ot care to much about this, just let me know what to do in the next series of entries....
