I've searched for a long time and there is a way!
There was a post in a forum saying that Nvidia cards have the option of keeping the image unstretched if an aplication has a lower resolution. You just have to browse the menu. I have an ATI card so I can't verify that.
For the rest of the world, the alternative is a rather complicated solution, the quality of the image may be a little lower and you may find in the end that the stretching wasn't such a big problem.
You have to run the program in windowed mode.
Here are the steps (if you skip step1, the game will run in a window of 1024x768pixels which you may find minuscule)
1.First you have to go to your graphic card interface and change your screen resolution to a lower one. My monitor has a 1:6 ratio with a native resolution of 1680x1050. You have to change it to a lower resolution with the same ratio. In my case 1280x800 (1280:800=1.6) showed my desktop unstretched (unfortunately your desktop icons will get rearranged).
2.Then you have to download d3dwindower and run it: http://www.brothersoft.com/d3dwindower-238977.html
4.Load stronghold crusader there by pressing the + icon and browsing for the .exe file in the installation folder of the game, and press the icon with the computer(run program). Then you have to click the stronghold crusader icon from your desktop shortcut or from the location of the game and you'll have the game running in a window the same height as your desktop. You may want to move the window a little upwards in order to see the lowest part, or you my hide the taskbar.
I hope that was useful.
