Yesterday I went from an old CRT that could do 1280x1024, to a 19 inch LCD that can do 1680x1050. Everything looks good until I play games, where the image on close objects is sharp but farther objects look "grainy", or pixelated somehow. Even maxing out anti aliasing doesn't make it go away. It almost reminds me of raising a picture's sharpness too high in Photoshop. Does anyone know what could be causing this? This is my first LCD so I don't know if it's common or not. Games I've tried that have this problem:

GTA IV
ArmA 2
Dawn of War 2
Dungeons and Dragons Online Eberron Unlimited

Well, an LCD with a higher resolution and higher screen size will make imperfections show up more.

Is that what you mean?

That's why larger screens and higher resolutions also means more AA and AF and the rest, unforunately.

There was an article in Edge not long ago that basically talked about how playing on a CRT gives you free AA.

to my knowledge dynamic contrast & inaccurate colors can also increase such a problem

at least that's my experience.

If he's using a TN+Film panel, this could explain why. They only do 6-bits per color and have a maximum color count of 16.0 million. They can achieve 16.2 with dithering. This dithering might be what he's seeing, or the lack of broad color range.

yep. TN's do this. But to help it...make sure you adjust your monitor. My NEC has a sharpness setting...I keep it around 22% otherwise its impossible to see.
