I have several DreamCatcher/Adventure Company games and I have found absolutely zero information on running these games in widscreen. (My display is 16:10 1440x900)

Games I have:
Post Mortem
Still Life
Curse: Eye of Isis
In Cold Blood
Crystal Key II
Curse of Atlantis: Thorgal's Quest
Arabian Nights
Moment of Silence
Arthur's Knights: Tales of Chivalry

I apologise for tossing up a big list of games like this, if anyone could point me towards general widescreen info for DreamCatcher/Adventure Company games that would be very helpful, as I haven't found anything at all for games by this company.

Most, actually I think all, of those games have pre-rendered 2D backgrounds. Unfortunately, that means there's no way to play those games in widescreen. With 3D games you have always have an internal representation of the entire world and you're basically just changing how much you can see of it. However, you can't change how much you can see of what is essentially a photograph.

Best thing you can do is play the games pillarboxed (black bars on the side so that the picture isn't stretched), which would rely on your video cards scaling settings.

I never figured out how to get my screen to display 4:3 like that. I have an LG Flatron W1952TQ, and my vid card is an XFX GeForce 8600 GT. Not sure what you mean by "scaling settings".

Last time I checked it only worked with a DVI connection; not sure (I've not been using VGA in a long while).

Here's how you set this anyway :

Control Panel > nvidia control panel > Advanced view (just in case)

-Display
--Change flat panel scaling > Use nvidia scaling with fixed-aspect ratio > Apply

I am using a DVI cable, but I don't see that option in the nVidia control panel.

I have version 1.5.2400.10

In the nVidia control panel under Display I see:
Run Display Optimisation Wizard
Change Resolution
Adjust Desktop Colour Settings
Rotate Display
Manage Custom Resolutions
Setup Multiple Displays

I am using the latest drivers from XFX. (My card is an XFX GeForce 8600 GT)

Don't get XFX drivers. Get nVidia drivers.

Also, make sure that advanced settings are enabled in the panel.
